All-Around Team Play Leads to Conference Win

Alyssa Gutierrez Gutierrez pitched four hitless innings.
The Chargers hold on to first in conference.

March 2nd, 2007

Final Stats

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress returned home again to host another conference match-up meeting up with Saddleback again. The Chargers hosted this time and everyone contributed to defeat the Gauchos 9-2. Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Gutierrez earned the win pitching four hitless innings and not allowing a walk to improve to 8-3.

Cypress started their scoring in the second. Freshman second baseman Christina Gonzales led off with a walk and moved to second off a sacrifice bunt from freshman first baseman Jessica Lupinetti. Sophomore right fielder Kristin Aufdemberg followed with a fielder’s choice that failed to throw out Gonzales at third. From there, sophomore left fielder Sabrina Hernandez hit a fly out to center for a sacrifice fly as Gonzales scored giving Cypress the 1-0 lead.

Cypress took advantage of Gaucho fielding errors in the third. Freshman shortstop Ashley Boyd reached first on an error and then stole second. An error on the very next batter put Gutierrez on first and moved Boyd to third. Freshman Caitlin McGrath came in to pinch run for Gutierrez and immediately stole second. Sophomore catcher Gabrielle Woody struck out but took advantage of a dropped pitch by the Gaucho catcher to reach first and load the bases. Sophomore designated player Brooke Pefley took advantage with a double to right scoring Boyd and Gutierrez. Pefley’s double was immediately followed by a stand-up double by Gonzales to right center to score Woody and Pefley. Cypress was not done as sophomore center fielder Jade Espinoza singled with two outs scoring Gonzales. After going through the entire lineup in the third, Cypress was up 6-0.

Cypress gave up their first run in the fifth but would match with their own run. Freshman right fielder Andrea Toledo reached base on a fielder’s choice. Freshman first baseman Heather Mills grounded out but moved Toledo to second. Hernandez came up next and showed some two out hitting with a single through the left side as Toledo slid home for Cypress’s eighth run. The Chargers would give up another run in the sixth and then matched again. Woody extended her hitting streak to 18 games with a single to left. Freshman pitcher Sydney Rae Woolley took advantage of her first at bat with a walk moving Woody to second. Freshman second baseman Nicole Palmer added a hit with a single to left moving Woody to third. Freshman right fielder Andrea Toledo took a pitch out to center for a sacrifice fly as Woody tagged up and scored giving Cypress the 9-2 lead. Woolley finished the game for Cypress pitching 3 innings and yielding 6 hits and 2 runs.

The Chargers head right into a tough weekend with two games Saturday. Cypress will start with fifth ranked Citrus and move directly into an afternoon game against top ranked Antelope Valley. The Chargers will start their day at 11:00 am at home against Citrus.
