Cypress, Calif. - Cypress closed out their four game weekend Sunday afternoon against Glendale. The Vaqueros played with Cypress for the first two innings until Cypress blew it out of the water in the third with ten runs eventually winning after five innings 12-0. Cypress accumulated 14 hits, all singles moving their runners along to continuously score. Freshman shortstop Ashley Boyd scored a game high 3 runs going 2 for 3 including an RBI and 2 stolen bases.
The Chargers warmed up with a run in the first. Boyd led off with a walk and stole second and was moved to third when sophomore pitcher Alyssa Gutierrez grounded out. Sophomore catcher Gabrielle Woody brought Boyd home with a single down the left field line to take the 1-0 lead.
Cypress continued the offense in the third. Boyd led it off again with a single and then stole second again. Gutierrez followed with a single and advanced to third on the throw as Boyd went to third. Woody picked up her second RBI of the game with another single to score Boyd and advanced to second on the throw as Gutierrez moved to third. Sophomore first baseman Brooke Pefley belted a fly ball to right that allowed Gutierrez to tag up and score and Gutierrez. Freshman first baseman Nicole Palmer hit into a fielder’s choice but Woody beat the throw sliding home. Sophomore right fielder Kristin Aufdemberg continued the hitting with a single down the right field line as Palmer sped to third. Freshman second baseman Christina Gonzales added another single bringing Palmer home. Sophomore left fielder Sabrina Hernandez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cypress singled their way to more runs as Espinoza, Boyd, and Gutierrez hit three straight singles scoring three straight runs. After the second out, Pefley hit a two RBI single to center scoring Espinoza and Boyd while Pefley and Gutierrez went to second and third on the throw. Palmer added the tenth hit of the inning scoring Gutierrez next. Cypress finally ended the inning after ten runs up 11-0.
After another shutout half inning in the fourth, Cypress continued scoring. Freshman right fielder Jessica Lupinetti singled followed by a single by freshman left fielder Andrea Toledo. After a fielder’s choice throwing out Lupinetti, freshman center fielder Caitlin McGrath singled to score Toledo for the twelfth run. Gutierrez earned the win pitching the first three innings with 4 strikeouts allowing just one hit and no walks. She improves to 14-3 on the season.
Cypress returns to conference play next facing last place Orange Coast next. The two will face up Wednesday at Cypress at 3:00 pm.
