Huntington Beach, Calif. - The Chargers began this season hoping for their first undefeated conference run until Cypress ran into Golden West earlier this season losing the rare home game 0-1. This time, Cypress headed to Golden West and took out their frustration with a big revenge win 8-0. Freshman first baseman Nicole Palmer collected her first collegiate home run with a three-run shot in the seventh.
The Chargers and Rustlers battled evenly matched through most of the game. Cypress placed just one runner on base through the first three innings. The Chargers were finally able to put a run up in the fourth. Freshman shortstop Ashley Boyd led the inning off with a single and then stole second. Sophomore catcher Gabrielle Woody followed up with a single to bring Boyd home giving Cypress the 1-0 lead. The Chargers added another in the sixth. Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Gutierrez belted a triple to start the action. Sophomore catcher Gabrielle Woody hit into a fielder’s choice but Gutierrez outran the throw reaching home and scoring the second run.
Why Cypress inched their way to the lead, Gutierrez held down the fort defensively allowing just two hits and no walks. The Chargers made the seventh and final inning the big one. Sophomore left fielder Sabrina Hernandez reached on a walk and was moved over when sophomore center fielder Jade Espinoza reached on an error. Boyd brought the first run of the inning home with a double to score Hernandez. Gutierrez hit into a failed fielder’s choice to load the bases. Woody belted a ball to left for a sacrifice fly as Espinoza tagged up and reached home. Sophomore second baseman Brooke Pefley followed with a two RBI double scoring Boyd and Espinoza. Palmer finished it off with her home run with Gutierrez and Pefley scoring as well. Gutierrez finished with the win to improve to 16-3 with 7 strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
Cypress goes straight to weekend action heading south to Palomar to face Long Beach City and Palomar. Cypress has defeated both of these teams this season already. Cypress will start with Long Beach City at 1:00 pm at Palomar.
