San Marcos, Calif. - The Chargers finished their Saturday off with a match up against Palomar again. The last time around, Cypress won 10-1. This time, the result would be similar as Cypress put up thirteen hits including three home runs for the 14-2 win. Sophomore first baseman Brooke Pefley led Cypress with three RBI and a home run.
Cypress wasted no time with three runs in the first. With two lead-off walks, sophomore catcher Gabrielle Woody hit an RBI single for Cypress’s first run. Freshman second baseman Nicole Palmer followed immediately with a two RBI single for the early 3-0 lead. The Chargers took the second inning off from scoring but gave up a run on a single and an error. Cypress got going again in the third starting with a solo home run from Woody for her second RBI of the day. After two singles and a hit batter, freshman third baseman Jessica Lupinetti was up with the bases loaded. Lupinetti was hit by a pitch as well to score Cypress’s fifth run.
The Chargers did not score again in the fourth but gave up another unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. Cypress topped it off with a nine run fifth inning. After a lead-ff walk from Palmer, sophomore right fielder Kristin Aufdemberg belted a triple to bring home Palmer. A sacrifice fly from freshman designated player Andrea Toledo would bring Palmer home next. After another single and an error, sophomore center fielder Jade Espinoza hit an RBI single to score another. Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Gutierrez followed with an RBI double and then Pefley hit her three-run home run. Cypress was not done adding another runner with an error. Freshman pinch hitter Lizette Mejia took her first at-bat of the game and hit a two-run home run to drive the nail in the coffin. Palomar had one more chance at the bottom of the fifth giving up a hit and two passed balls for another unearned run, the fifth of the weekend. Gutierrez finished with the win to improve to 17-3 with 2 strikeouts and yielding 5 hits.
Cypress has a few days off and then returns to conference play against Orange Coast on the road. Cypress has already defeated the last place Pirates last week 8-0 at home. The two will meet up again Wednesday at 3:00 pm at Orange Coast.
