Chargers Finish Weekend with Three Wins and a Rare Loss

Ashley Boyd Boyd finished with four RBI.
Cypress bounces back from a loss with three straight wins.

Ventura, Calif. - The Chargers were riding an eighteen game win streak entering a weekend tournament at Ventura. Cypress’s streak ended abruptly with a loss to start the tournament but bounced back to win three straight to start a new win streak. The Chargers suffered their loss to Cerritos 0-2 before defeating San Diego Mesa 12-2, Ventura 5-2, and Glendale 10-1. Freshman shortstop Ashley Boyd led Cypress with 4 RBI with 3 doubles over the weekend.

Cypress ran into trouble in their first match up with Cerritos. Cypress collected just five hits but stranded six runners to get shut out. Cypress ran into trouble in the sixth with an outfield error and two hits that allowed the Falcons to score two runs. The Chargers continued to get shut out to suffer their first loss in eighteen games. Sophomore Alyssa Gutierrez suffered the loss striking out three while giving up 7 hits and no earned runs to fall to 19-4 on the season.

The Chargers took their frustrations out on San Diego Mesa in the afternoon with a 12-2 victory. Cypress racked up 12 hits and held the Olympians to just two runs despite five errors. Sophomore center fielder Jade Espinoza paced Cypress with a three-run home run, her first collegiate home run. Freshman second baseman Christina Gonzales added a two RBI single. Sophomore second baseman Gabrielle Woody showed consistency going 2 for 3 on the game with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman Sydney Rae Woolley earned the win allowing no earned runs on 7 hits.

Sunday action started with a face off against the host Pirates of Ventura. Cypress came out hitting with 9 hits and improved defensively with no errors for the 5-2 win. The Chargers did not score until the fourth with three runs and scored a run in each inning after. The Pirates broke the shut-out in the seventh but it was not enough to catch up. Cypress put out a balanced attack with Woody pacing the Chargers going 2 for 2 including a double with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Gutierrez earned the win to improve to 20-4 striking out four batters while yielding two runs on three hits.

Cypress finished up the weekend with a quick rematch against Glendale. Cypress finished it in five innings with a 10-1 victory on 13 hits and no errors. Three players finished with three RBI. Boyd went 3 for 4 including 2 doubles and 2 runs scored. Gutierrez finished with the exact same stats as Boyd. Sophomore first baseman Brooke Pefley had three RBI on the day with a double and a sacrifice fly. Freshman right fielder Caitlin McGrath went 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Woolley earned the win improving to 13-0 on the season.

Cypress improves to 33-4 and return home to host a double-header against Cuesta on Wednesday. This will be the second and third time Cypress will face Cuesta after defeating the Cougars 15-2 in February. Cypress will face Cuesta in the first game Wednesday at noon.
