Cypress Avenges a Second Loss with Win over Cerritos

Sydney Rae Woolley Woolley pitched her second shutout of the day.
The Chargers move on to the semifinals.

May 18th, 2007

Chino Hills, Calif. - Cypress entered the State Tournament 2-3 against teams in the tournament. Cypress avenged one loss earlier in the day against Sierra and took care of the second one with a shutout win over Cerritos. Cerritos had a few opportunities but could not convert as Cypress came away with the 7-0 win. Cypress freshman pitcher Sydney Rae Woolley allowed just four Falcons hits for her seventeenth win of the season.

Neither team could score in the first but the Cypress bats awoke in the second with a big five run inning. Sophomore left fielder Sabrina Hernandez led off with a bunt single and then reached second after a sacrifice bunt. Freshman third baseman Lizette Mejia singled up the middle for an RBI as Hernandez scored the first run. Sophomore right fielder Kristen Aufdemberg reached on an error to advance Mejia to third. Aufdemberg made it two in scoring position by stealing second. Freshman designated player Caitlin McGrath took advantage of another Falcons error moving Aufdemberg to third and scoring Mejia. McGrath stole second preparing for freshman shortstop Ashley Boyd who produced a two RBI single through the left side and then advanced to second on the throw. Sophomore first baseman Brooke Pefley finished the inning off with a single to right center scoring Boyd for the fifth and final run of the inning.

Cerritos had their best shot in the fourth with a runner on third. Woolley shut the door forcing a fly out to right to end the Falcon threat. Cypress added their sixth run in the fourth off another error. McGrath singled to short and advanced to second on a mis-thrown ball. Boyd flied out to right allowing McGrath to tag up and reach third. Pefley produced another RBI single to right scoring McGrath. The Chargers finished up with a solo home run from Woody for their seventh and final run. Woolley finished out the game with two straight innings down in order to finish the shutout.

Cypress improves to 52-4 on the season and moves on to the semi-finals. The Chargers will face the winner of the Mt. Sac and Antelope Valley game with the possibility of avenging their third loss if they face the Mounties. Cypress will play again on Saturday at 7:00 pm on Field One at the Chino Hills Big League Dreams Park.
