Cypress Produces First Mercy Rule Win

Cypress, Calif. - The Chargers played their second game of the season and the day Saturday afternoon against the 13th ranked Comets of Palomar. Cypress Put up a six run inning and finished with eight while shutting out the Comets for the 8-0 mercy rule win in five innings. Freshman pitcher Alyssa Freight made her first collegiate appearance pitching the full five innings for a complete game shutout win with eight strikeouts and two hits.
Cypress put up a big six runs in the first innings to take control early. Sophomore shortstop Ashley Boyd reached on an error and freshman centerfielder Amanda Fama and freshman designated player Lisa Armenta both walked to load the bases. A wild pitch later and Boyd came around to score Cypress’s first run. Sophomore third baseman Sarah Strong walked to load the bases again. A ground out RBI from sophomore first baseman Nicole Palmer brought Armenta home. Freshman second baseman Stephanie Gonzales was hit by a pitch loading up the bases yet again. Freshman left fielder Krissi Rae Sylvis hit a ball to left for a sacrifice fly as Armenta scored. Freshman catcher Mandee Farish produced the first hit of the day with a single to left scoring Strong. Sophomore right fielder Caitlin McGrath came up with a second hit with a single up the middle for Stephanie Gonzales to score. Boyd put up the third straight single scoring Farish for Cypress’s sixth run off of just three hits.
The next few innings went by quickly as Freight faced just twelve batters in the first four innings. Cypress scored the seventh and eighth runs required for a mercy ruling in the bottom of the fourth. McGrath hit her second single up the middle and Fama brought her home with a triple off the right field wall. Strong then scored Fama with a double for the eighth run. Freight’s pace slowed in the fifth as Palomar loaded the bases but Freight maintained the shutout by striking out the third out and ending the game in five innings.
Cypress finishes the day 2-0 and prepares for their first conference opponent against rival Fullerton. The Hornets are 3-1 with their only loss coming from first ranked Mt. Sac. The two meet up in the conference opener Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
