A Steady Pace Gives Cypress another Win over Fullerton

Fullerton, Calif. - The Chargers headed on the road Thursday for their second matchup against rival Fullerton. Cypress repeated their winning performance against the Hornets, this time in a shutout 5-0. Sophomore shortstop Ashley Boyd led Cypress going two for four with an RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, Cypress put together a steady pace building runs for the win. Sophomore third baseman Sarah Strong led the second inning off with a walk and moved to second off a sacrifice bunt by freshman designated player Stephanie Gonzales. Strong then hit third on a wild pitch and then all the way home off a Hornet error for the early 1-0 Cypress lead.
Cypress added their second in the third. Sophomore second baseman Christina Gonzales singled on a bunt followed by another bunt single by freshman left fielder Vanessa Gonzales. Both moved over off an illegal pitch. Boyd then hit into an RBI fielder’s choice allowing Christina Gonzales to score for the 2-0 lead.
Freshman pitcher Alyssa Freight did her part eliminating nine straight batters before allowing a lead-off single in the fourth for the first Fullerton runner on base. The runner would be stranded at third ending the inning scoreless for Fullerton. Cypress’s biggest inning came in the fifth with a two-run inning. Boyd led off with a single to left center and then stole second and then hit third off a ground out. Strong laid down a bunt single for an RBI as Boyd came in to score. Stephanie Gonzales then came through with a single through the left side moving Strong to third. Sophomore Nicole Palmer came in to pinch hit and produced immediately with an RBI single scoring Strong for a 4-0 lead.
Cypress scored their fifth and final run in the sixth. Freshman left fielder Kayla Van Dieren put up a double to left center. Vanessa Gonzales came in to run for Van Dieren and reached third off an error. McGrath then hit in the final run with an RBI fielder’s choice for the fifth Charger run.
Freight earned the win improving to 9-0 on the season striking out five batters in 5.2 innings and allowing two hits. Sophomore Sydney Rae Woolley pitched the final 1.1 innings allowing two hits and no runs.
Cypress improves to 14-0 and 8-0 in conference as the state’s only remaining undefeated team. They have a day off before hosting a tough double-header at home on Saturday. Cypress will start the day against 12-4 Citrus at 1:00 pm and end it against 14-3 Antelope Valley at 3:00 pm Saturday.
