Cypress, Calif. - The Chargers just narrowly escaped a loss to Citrus earlier in the afternoon and kept it interesting again against sixth ranked Antelope Valley. Cypress was behind 2-0 before mounting a huge sixth inning comeback for the 4-2 win to maintain their undefeated record. Freshman Lisa Armenta came off the bench to spark the comeback with a two RBI double tying the game off one swing.
Cypress had their chances early loading the bases in the second with just one out but stranding all three to stay scoreless. Two more runners stranded on second in the third and fourth left Cypress stymied at zero. Cypress had another great opportunity in the fifth with runners on second and third but left them there as Cypress just could not seem to score.
Antelope Valley capitalized on their opportunity in the sixth. After a strikeout wild pitch and a single, Cypress attempted a pitch out pick-off that went bad allowing the first Marauder runner to score. After a double, AVC was up 2-0.
Cypress needed another comeback performance and did just that. Freshman right fielder Stephanie Gonzales hit one over the left fielder’s head and motored all the way to third for a triple to lead off. Freshman designated hitter Kayla Van Dieren walked and stole second for the tying run in scoring position. Armenta came off the bench to pinch hit and came through with a double to the right field wall as Stephanie Gonzales and Van Dieren scored tying the game at two for the second straight Cypress comeback. Sophomore Caitlin McGrath came in to pinch run for Armenta and moved to third off a sacrifice bunt by sophomore second baseman Christina Gonzales. Freshman left fielder Vanessa Gonzales hit into a fielder’s choice to the pitcher and McGrath beat out the throw sliding home. Sophomore shortstop Ashley Boyd kept it going with a single up the middle and Vanessa Gonzales rounded third to slide home and score for the 4-2 comeback lead. After shutting out the Marauders in the top of the seventh, Cypress secured their 17th straight win.
Cypress improves to 17-0 and has a day off before returning to action against L.A. Valley in a non-conference match-up. LA Valley is 11-6 coming off of a 10-2 loss to Canyons and ranked 13th in Southern California. The two face up Monday at 3:00 pm at Cypress.
