Cypress, Calif. - The Chargers had the tough task of bouncing back from their first loss of the season Saturday morning to face the defending state champs hoping not to lose two straight. Cypress was right back in winning form shutting out Mt. Sac for the second time in less than a week 4-0. Freshman pitcher Alyssa Freight and the Charger defense assured the win pitching 6.1 perfect innings before allowing the only Mt. Sac runner on base in the bottom of the seventh. Freight allowed just one hit in the shutout with no walks while striking out two batters to improve to 21-1.
The top of the Charger lineup brought home one run in the first. Sophomore shortstop Ashley Boyd started it off with a double to right center. Sophomore right fielder Caitlin McGrath singled to second and the Mounties missed the throw allowing Boyd to round third and score.
Back at the top of the lineup in the third, Boyd doubled again, this time down the left field line. McGrath moved Boyd to third with a sacrifice fly to center for their second one-run inning.
The fourth inning brought in a couple of runs for Cypress. Sophomore first baseman Nicole Palmer was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman left fielder Kayla Van Dieren. Freshman catcher Lisa Armenta kicked off a two-out rally with an RBI single to left as Palmer scored. Sophomore second baseman Christina Gonzales then topped it off with a triple down the right field line scoring Armenta as Cypress hopped out to a 4-0 lead which held for the rest of the game.
Cypress improves to 37-1 and has a few days off before a conference road matchup against Golden West. The last time they met, Cypress won 4-2. The meet up again Wednesday at 3:00 pm at Golden West.
