Cypress, Calif. - Cypress hosted their final home game of the season on Mother’s Day Sunday playing for entry into their seventh straight State Championship tournament. The Chargers scored early and held off a feisty Riverside crew to edge out the Tigers 4-3 to avoid a game three situation. Cypress played as the visitors because of the coin flip. They will now move on to the State Championship tournament along with seven of the best softball programs in the state. Sophomore right fielder Caitlin McGrath paced the Chargers going three for four with a run scored and two stolen bases.
Cypress chipped in a run in the first as McGrath worked her way around the bases. First she beat out the throw to first with a single to the shortstop and then stole second. She moved to third on a ground out and sophomore third baseman Sarah Strong batted her in with a well placed ball in the hole behind the first baseman.
Cypress picked up the pace in the second starting the inning with three straight singles. Freshman left fielder Kayla Van Dieren beat out the throw on an infield single to the pitcher followed by a bunt single by freshman designated player Stephanie Gonzales. Freshman catcher Lisa Armenta drove in the first run of the inning with a single to score Van Dieren. With runners on first and second, sophomore shortstop Alyssa Freight struck out the second, and sophomore second baseman Christina Gonzales fielded a grounder for the third to end the game with the win securely in hand. Freight earned her 32nd win of the season pitching the complete game. She allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out four.
Cypress improves to 51-2 and move on to State Championship tournament competition. The Chargers will take on the fourth seed from the North region, Shasta. Cypress defeated Shasta earlier this season in one of the most dramatic games of their season. After falling behind by two runs, Cypress took the lead before Shasta took the lead back and then Cypress jumped right back up in the top of the ninth for the 4-3 win. The Chargers begin their quest for their sixth state championship Friday at 2:00 pm at Orange Terrace Park in Riverside.
