Cypress, Calif. - The Chargers hosted Grossmont Friday beginning their day at noon in game one of two against the Griffins. Cypress pulled off a come from behind win in game one 5-4 before losing by the same score in game two in extra innings. Sophomore second baseman Roni Alvarado pulled off the heroic play in game one driving in the game winning run with a single in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Cypress took the lead with a run in the first in game one as freshman third baseman Nicole Nobbe tripled and scored off a single. Grossmont pulled ahead in the third scoring all four of its runs off of two homeruns. Down three, the Chargers rallied taking advantage of Grossmont errors to tie it up 4-4 after the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore first baseman Vanessa Alvarado singled and moved ahead off another single. With two outs down, Roni Alvarado drove a single up the middle as Vanessa Alvarado scored the decisive run for the win. Freshman starter Katrina Pinkowski (17-1) earned the win striking out four.
Game two began with two Griffins runs in the first. Cypress cut into the lead by one in the bottom of the first. Sophomore catcher Amanda Fama led off with a single, stole second, reached third on a ground out, and then slid home beating out the throw on a fielder’s choice. Cypress tied it up in the second thanks to an RBI triple by freshman centerfielder Brianne Webster. The score continued to go back and forth with Grossmont taking the one-run lead in the fifth. The Chargers answered by taking their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth thanks to some Grossmont errors. Cypress just had to hold the Griffins in the seventh to take home the win. With two outs down, Cypress just had to make the final out the take home its second win of the day. The Charger defense failed committing an error to allow a Grossmont run to tie it up. Grossmont scored one off another Cypress error in the eighth and Cypress failed to score succumbing to the loss. Pinkowski (17-2) suffered the loss allowing two earned runs while pitching all eight innings.
Cypress (30-4) has no time off as they head to Cerritos to take on the Falcons for the third time this season. The two met twice earlier this year splitting the outcomes with both games being decided by just one run. They meet again Saturday at Cerritos at 1:00 pm.
