Bakersfield, Calif. - Championship day began at high-noon for Cypress College and defending state champ Mt. San Antonio at Bakersfield College Sunday. Cypress came in to take the lead and hold on despite a strong Mountie comeback to win its record sixth State Championship 7-6. This is Cypress’s first State Championship since 2006 and also head coach Brad Pickler’s sixth. Cypress held on in a thrilling bottom of the seventh to seal the one-run win.
Cypress took an early lead with a solo homerun by sophomore catcher Amanda Fama. Fama repeated with another solo homerun in the third for a 2-0 lead. Fama finished the tournament as the Most Tournament Most Valuable Player. Cypress extended its lead in the fifth with a wild pitch to score freshman centerfielder Brianne Webster and a bases loaded hit batter to score Fama who was intentionally walked.
Mt. Sac began its comeback from there hammering four hits for four runs and erasing the lead to tie it up 4-4. Cypress jumped ahead in the sixth with an RBI single by freshman third baseman Nicole Nobbe and a two RBI single by sophomore first baseman Vanessa Alvarado for a three run lead.
Mt. Sac had its last shot in the bottom of the seventh and took full advantage leading off with four straight hits to score two making the Charger faithful very nervous. With two runners in scoring position and just one out, sophomore pitcher and tournament Most Valuable Pitcher Alyssa Freight shut down the Mounties for the final outs and securing the win.
