Bakersfield, Calif. - Cypress College won its second straight State Championship, and seventh in school history, with a 9-1 rout of San Joaquin Delta in the California Community College Athletic Association Softball Championship game on Sunday at Bakersfield College.
Cypress sophomore third baseman Jennifer Aanderud earned this year's top honor of 2011 State Tournament Most Valuable Player after batting .375 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI. Charger freshman southpaw Monique Hernandez was recognized as the 2011 State Tournament Most Valuable Pitcher after going 2-0 while picking up a save in the game she didn't start. Cypress sophomore first baseman Marilyn Toriz earned top defensive honors as the 2011 State Tournament Gold Glove Award winner for her outstanding play at first base after recording 27 put-outs and two assists without commiting an error. In all, there were nine Cypress players selected to the 2011 All-Tournament Team. (See Chart Below)
The Chargers are now 6-0, with back-to-back titles, in the last two State Tournaments, after capping off a dominating 3-0 run through this year's field with Sunday's blowout win over the Mustangs in a shortened six-inning contest. Cypress handed Delta its first loss of the season in the opening game of the State Tournament on Friday, with a convincing 5-1 victory over San Joaquin Delta's previously unbeaten pitcher, Katie Cotta (32-2). In that matchup, Hernandez tossed a two hitter to out-duel Delta's overhyped top pitcher. Hernandez tagged Cotta with her second loss of the season just two days later in Sunday's Championship game by allowing one run on two hits in a four-inning effort to finish off her freshman campaign with a solid 17-5 mark on the year. On Saturday, sophomore Mia Magalona held Mt. San Antonia College's highly touted offense scoreless through six innings, before Hernandez came out of the pen to pick up her fourth save of the year by slamming the door on any hopes the Mounties had of a comeback attempt.
The Chargers (42-8) picked up their back to back State Championships thanks to patience at the plate. Cypress drew six walks and reached base an additonal four times when Cotta's wildness hit four Chargers, with three of those HBP's coming in a devestating eight-run second inning scoring outburst by Cypress. The game was pretty much over by then as the Mustangs (44-2) weren't able to get anything going against Hernandez trailing 8-0.
Cypress was able to chase Delta's ace Katie Cotta after four straight bases-loaded RBI-walks in that inning. The final four runs of the inning would come thanks to an Arren Nunez RBI bunt single that scored Audrey Harner from thirdbase, a two-RBI single through the left side of the field by Aanderud that plated Jessica Reichner and Toriz, and a single to left by Olivia Arredondo that brought in Nunez with the eighth run of the inning.
Delta struggled to get anything going on offense against the tandem of Hernandez and Magalona - who pitched the final two innings of the contest. The Mustangs lone score came in the top of the fifth when Desirae Walsh drove in a run on a ground out to second base.
Cypress would put the game away for good in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cristina Crissman brought in Brianne Webster from third with a game winning sacrifice fly to center to make it a 9-1 game.
Aanderud finished 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI in the deciding game, while designated player Arren Nunez finished 2 for 4 with a run and RBI.
As a team, Cypress outscored its opponents 18-2 in its three victories, with a 5-1 win over San Joaquin Delta in game one, a 4-0 shutout of Mt. SAC in game two, and a 9-1 rout of Delta in the championship game.
Individually, Toriz led the Chargers with a team-high four RBI over the three-day tournament, followed by Tourney MVP Aanderud with three, and four outhers tied with two apiece. Audrey Harner scored three times to lead the team, while six other players crossed the plate twice each. Harner and Toriz had the only homeruns for the Chargers.
