Chargers Place Fifth at OEC Championships

Mission Viejo, Calif. - Cypress capped off their regular season with the Orange Empire Conference Championship meet at Saddleback that ran from Thursday to Saturday. The Charger women finished fifth out of the seven conference teams with a score of 265.5. Freshman Kelsey Mattes swam her way to the highest place for the Chargers over the weekend with a third place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:19.76. She was just edged out by the second place finisher by 0.33 seconds and beat out 13 other swimmers.
Day one began with the 200 M free relay where Cypress finished fifth with a time of 1:48.98. Freshman Nicole Cliff’s preliminary swim earned her a berth into the championship finals in the 50 M Freestyle sprint and placed eighth with a time of 27.53. Cypress ended day one with the 400 medley where the Chargers placed sixth.
The Chargers started day two with the 200 medley relay and placed fifth. Mattes followed with her third place finish and was the only individual woman for Cypress in a championship final on day two. Cypress ended the day with the 800 free relay and placed sixth.
The championship meet culminated on day three. Freshman Melissa Treu kicked the day off with an 11th place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 21:53.79. Freshman Rebecca Crigger finished fifth in the championship finals for the 100 freestyle. Mattes entered her second individual championship final of the meet and placed seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.51. Crigger was also in her second individual championship and placed fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.44. Cypress capped off the meet with a fifth place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:00.63.
Mattes and Crigger will now prepare for the Stat Championship Meet which will be held Thursday to Saturday at Saddleback again.
