Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers hosted their first home game of the season Friday hosting the undefeated Olympians of San Diego Mesa. Cypress started strong, lost momentum, but came back just in time for the win in five games 29-27, 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, and 15-13. Sophomore outside hitter Marina Samoa led Cypress with a 17 kill match while also adding 22 digs and three blocks.
Game one was the most competitive as the teams battled back and forth forcing extra points until Cypress finally pulled ahead by two for the game one win. The Chargers cruised in game two pulling ahead by as much as eight and held back an Olympian comeback for the four point win. Cypress needed just one more win to finish Mesa off but failed to do so in the next two games as Mesa picked up the pace. The match came down to game five. Each team exchanged momentum and it was close till the end when Cypress edged out the Olympians for the game and match win.
Sophomore outside hitter Katie Saavedra followed Samoa with 14 kills while adding 20 digs. Freshman setter Giajaida Vargas emerged as Cypress’s all-around player with 42 assists, 15 digs, four aces, and five blocks. Freshman defensive specialist Madison Moss picked up 26 digs.
Cypress (3-1) has no time off as they head to Cuyamaca Saturday for a day-long tournament.
