All Cylinders Fire in Charger Sweep of the Rustlers

Cypress sweeps Golden West for the first time.

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress traveled to Golden West Wednesday night to take on the first place Rustlers. The Chargers came out sprinting sweeping Golden West for the first time in head coach Nancy Welliver’s ten years at Cypress. Sophomore outside hitter Marina Samoa led the Chargers collecting five aces and 14 kills.

The teams started competitively as expected though the first eight points before Cypress pulled away and Samoa collected eight kills on the way to the 25-20 first set win. Golden West adjusted in the second set but Cypress was able to keep going to coast to the 25-15 win while freshman outside hitter Kelly Chiffer produced six kills in the set. Cypress came out firing in the third set blocking most of the Rustlers attempts and sophomore outside hitter Katie Saavedra picked up five kills. Samoa drove in four straight aces in the third set on the way to the 25-17 win. Freshman setter Giajaida Vargas finished the match with 34 assists.

Cypress (11-4, 4-2) move into a three-way tie for third. Cypress heads into the last match of the first half of conference play taking on Riverside on Friday. The two face off at Riverside Friday at 6:00 pm.
