Riverside, Calif. – Cypress ended the first half of conference action Friday night traveling to Riverside to face the Tigers. Despite being without their number one hitter, the Chargers persevered to win in five sets. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Saavedra led Cypress with 25 kills, 25 digs, three blocks, and no service reception or service errors.

The Chargers struggled to adjust early losing the first set 25-22. They picked it up immediately in the second set rolling over Riverside 25-13. Controversial calls in the third set put Cypress off their game as they lost 25-19 and now had their backs against the wall. Cypress had to win two straight sets and did just that pushing out a close one in the fourth set 27-25 after some long rallies and then winning the deciding fifth set 15-13.

Saavedra was followed by freshman middle blocker Sarah Ray who returned from injury with 11 kills and six blocks. Freshman middle blocker Kayla Pace picked up ten kills and three blocks. Freshman setter Giajaida Vargas contributed 53 assists.

Cypress (12-4, 5-2) has the weekend off before starting conference over again hosting Fullerton Wednesday. Cypress defeated Fullerton in four sets earlier this season. The two meet again at Cypress at 6:00 pm Wednesday.
