Costa Mesa, Calif. – Cypress was looking to climb up the standings Wednesday night taking on Orange Coast in a rematch after losing to the Pirates in five sets earlier this season. The two battled to five sets again in a two-hour marathon and this time, Cypress came out on top. The win bumps Cypress up into a three-way tie for first in conference with Orange Coast and Irvine Valley. Sophomore outside hitter Marina Samoa led the Chargers with 27 kills and 40 digs.

The Pirates were caught on their heels early as Cypress pushed to a 25-13 first set win. After getting an early lead in the second set, OCC caught up to win the second set 25-22 tying the match. The third set proved competitive with a series of long rallies which Cypress won on the way to the 25-23 win. OCC came right back in the fourth set while Cypress made errors as the Chargers lost the fourth set 25-19. With the match on the line in the fifth set, Cypress fell behind 8-4. A timeout changed the pace for Cypress as they surged back to the 15-13 win ending the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Katie Saavedra picked up 18 kills and sophomore middle blocker Jasmine Samoa made six blocks. Freshman setter Giajaida Vargas added 43 assists.

Cypress (15-4, 8-2) has another critical match coming up next as they take on first place Irvine Valley. The Chargers were swept by the Lasers earlier this season. They face off again Friday at home at 6:00 pm.
