Charger Volleyball Makes History Clinching First Ever Conference Championship

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress entered Wednesday’s match needing one more win to hit a historic conference championship. The Chargers had to get past a tough Riverside squad who had forced Cypress to five sets earlier in the season. The Chargers made a quick night of it sweeping Riverside in three sets in just over one hour. The win earned Cypress and 10th year head coach Nancy Welliver their first ever Orange Empire Conference Championship.
Cypress came out on the floor on a mission jumping ahead of the Tigers and plowing their way to the 25-15 first set win. Riverside came back in the second set taking a narrow early lead over Cypress. The Chargers quickly charged ahead though on the way to the 25-19 win. Riverside kept it close in the third set but Cypress stayed ahead finishing them off with the 25-18 third set win for the match and the championship.
Sophomore outside hitter Marina Samoa led Cypress with 15 kills, 19 digs, and three aces. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Saavedra followed with 11 kills. Freshman setter Giajaida Vargas added 38 assists.
Cypress (19-4, 12-2) will host the first round of playoffs taking on Cerritos Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
