Chargers Punch Their Ticket to the State Championships

Santa Barbara, Calif. – Cypress headed to Santa Barbara Saturday night attempting to upset the Vaqueros in order to move on to the State Championships. Santa Barbara did not make it easy as the teams went to five sets but Cypress pulled it off with the upset win and a ticket to the State Championships. Sophomore outside hitter Marina Samoa led the team with 24 kills and 22 digs.

The Chargers came out strong catching the Vaqueros on their heels. After battling through the 17th point, Cypress pulled away hitting 51.7% through the set for the 25-19 win. Cypress led through most of the second set as well and reached game point before a controversial call. Santa Barbara pulled ahead and won the second set 26-24 tying the match. Cypress came out strong again in the third set and led the whole way on to a 25-21 win and the match lead. The magic wore off in the fourth set as errors got the best of Cypress losing 25-20 and forcing a fifth set. Cypress fell behind early in the fifth set 5-1 and they could see their season slipping away. The Chargers fought back and scratched their way ahead to the 15-11 win.

Sophomore outside hitter Katie Saavedra paced Cypress with 20 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Jazmine Samoa added five blocks and three aces. Freshman setter Giajaida Vargas put up a season high 60 assists.

Cypress (21-4) will now head to the elite eight State Championship tournament for just the second time in school history. The Chargers will head to San Joaquiin Delta this weekend taking on the third seed from the North, Santa Rosa on Friday at 3:00 pm to start the double elimination tournament.
