Cypress Opens the State Championship Tournament with a Sweep

Stockton, Calif. – The eight remaining teams in the state converged on San Joaquin Delta College Friday to start the opening round of the 2009 State Championship tournament. Cypress, making just their second program appearance, started strong upsetting the 2nd seed from the North Santa Rosa in a sweep 25-21, 25-21, 25-22. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Saavedra paced the Chargerswith 13 kills and 10 digs.
Cypress held strong defensively outdoing the Bear Cubs 60-47 on digs. Sophomore outside hitter Marina Samoa led Cypress with 16 kills and 14 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Madison Moss added 17 digs while freshman setter Giajaida Vargas set for 34 assists.
The Chargers (22-4) goes on to the second round in the winner’s bracket to take on undefeated Bakersfield Saturday at 10:00 am.
