Championship Hopes Slip Away, 2nd Place Finish Still Historic

Stockton, Calif. – Cypress headed into Sunday just one game away from a State Championship taking on fellow Orange Empire co-champions Orange Coast. The Chargers lost steam after an undefeated playoff run losing to Coast in four sets and then losing in the “if necessary” game 15, 25-16. Sophomore outside hitter Marina Samoa led the Chargers with 25 kills and 21 digs in the first match.
The Chargers started on the wrong foot with a .135 attack percentage in the first set losing 25-20. They were able to bounce back with a 25-21 win in the second set. Cypress was unable to keep the momentum going losing the second two sets in a row 25-23 and 25-21 to force the “if necessary” winner-take-all game to 25. Cypress struggled in the “if necessary” game making seven attack errors and losing 25-16.
Sophomore outside hitter Katie Saavedra finished with 12 kills and 23 digs in the first match. Freshman setter Giajaida Vargas set for 53 aces and 13 digs. Saavedra, Samoa, and Vargas all made the all-tournament team.
Cypress (24-5) finishes with their best record in school history, their best finish in school history (2nd) and their first ever Orange Empire Conference Championship.
