Chargers Fall to El Camino in Five Set Marathon

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress hosted its first home match of the 2010 season Wednesday taking on perennial powerhouse El Camino. The two battled it out in five exciting sets but Cypress could not pull it out in the end losing 3-2. Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Boyle led the Chargers with 21 kills and 24 digs.
All five sets were close and the teams set the tone in the first set. El Camino burst ahead to the lead in the set one and took a 22-18 lead late. Cypress woke up and won five straight from there to take the lead 23-22. The teams went back and forth from there going into extra points before El Camino inched ahead to win the first set 28-26.
The teams were evenly matched to start the second set until the Chargers surged with a five point run to take the 18-14 lead. The Chargers maintained control from there to tie the match at a set a piece with the 25-19 second set win.
Cypress took the momentum into the third set taking the early lead. They held control throughout taking the 2-1 match lead with a 25-17 third set win. The Warriors would not back down taking a small lead in the fourth set. Cypress kept up but was unable to get ahead as El Camino took the fourth set 25-22 tying the match and forcing the decisive fifth set.
The fifth set was marked with several long rallies and spectacular digs. The teams exchanged points back and forth and El Camino took a slight. Cypress fought back to tie it up 8-8 forcing an El Camino timeout. The back and forth continued with neither team relenting until El Camino pushed ahead at the end to win 15-13.
Sophomore setter Giajaida Vargas picked up 59 assists and 26 digs. Sophomore libero Madison Moss led the team defensively with 31 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Chiffer grabbed six blocks and 14 kills.
Cypress (1-2) has a day off before heading south to San Diego Mesa Friday. The Chargers will take part in a two day tournament Friday and Saturday.
