Chargers Clean Up in Sweep of Gauchos

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress hosted Saddleback Tuesday hoping to sweep the Gauchos for the second time this season. The Chargers pulled it off with three straight wins sweeping Saddleback 25-15, 25-23, and 25-21. Freshman middle blocker Kelsey Mersey led Cypress with ten kills followed by eight kills by sophomore opposite Ashley Spaulding. Sophomore setter Giajaida Vargas picked up 26 assists and ten digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Catherine Aragon led defensively with 14 digs.
The Chargers started strong in the first set pulling ahead early and grew their lead to coast to a ten point win highlighted by three straight aces by freshman outside hitter Stephanie Casillas. Cypress struggled in the second game falling behind by as much as five. Cypress was able to pull even in the middle of the set. Saddleback pushed back and took a 21-15 lead before Cypress rumbled back and pulled even at 23-23. Cypress took the lead from there and escaped with the two point win. The Chargers maintained control through most of third game. Saddleback made a late push closing to within two late but Cypress pulled away for the four point win.
Cypress (17-4, 8-2) will head on the road next for a pivotal match. The Chargers will take on a tough Riverside squad on Friday needing a win to hold on to first place in conference. The match also has major playoff implications where the outcome could determine home court advantage for Cypress in playoffs. The last time Cypress faced Riverside, the match went to five sets with the Chargers edging out the Tigers 15-9 in the fifth set. The two will meet again Friday at Riverside at 7:00 pm.
