Santa Monica Forfeits but the Teams Play Anyway with Cypress Coming Out on Top

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress played their home opener Tuesday despite a pre-game forfeit by Santa Monica. With the win already in the pocket, the teams battled it out anyway while Cypress squeezed out a two point victory 8-6. Freshman 2 Meter player Megan Valenzuela led Cypress with half of Cypress’s eight goals.

The Chargers fell behind early unable to score in the first quarter as Santa Monica took the 2-0 lead. Cypress surged in the second quarter with two goals from Valenzuela and a goal from freshman attacker Kristle Winter for the 3-2 lead heading into halftime.

Santa Monica took the lead again in the third quarter with two straight goals before Winter and Valenzuela scored again heading into the fourth quarter with a 5-5 tie. With just one quarter remaining, Cypress put up their biggest quarter yet with a goal from freshman 2 Meter player Nora Jean TerBorch, Winter, and then Valenzuela again to seal the two goal victory. Freshman goalie Brooke Sovick held Santa Monica back making eleven saves.

Cypress improves to 2-0 and has just a day off before hosting Sierra on Thursday at 3:00 pm. Cypress and Sierra met three times in 2008 with Sierra taking wins in all three meetings.
