Cypress Starts 2010 with Saturday Split

Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers began 2010 with a home mini-tournament Saturday hosting LA Valley and Ventura. Cypress kicked off the season with a 14-6 defeat of LA Valley before falling by just one goal to Ventura. Sophomore 2 meter player Megan Valenzuela led Cypress scoring seven goals with two assists and three steals.
Cypress started strong against the Monarchs to start the day. After taking a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, Cypress doubled LA Valley’s score at half 6-3. Cypress surged ahead from there outscoring the Monarchs 8-3 in the second half for the eight goal win. Valenzuela picked up four goals while freshman utility player Rachel Weinstock and freshman two meter player Britny Javier grabbed two goals each. Sophomore keeper Brooke Sovick finished with eight saves.
The day ended against the Pirates of Ventura in a tightly contested match. Cypress took the early lead 2-1 after the first quarter and pushed ahead to an 8-4 lead to start the fourth quarter. Cypress’s scoring halted from there as Ventura fought back in the fourth quarter with four straight goals to tie it at 8-8 with just two minutes remaining. The Pirates scored the decisive goal with 1:19 remaining and the Chargers were unable to answer. Valenzuela finished with three goals while Weinstock and sophomore 2 meter player Kristle Winter finished with two each. Sovick ended the game with 10 saves.
Cypress (1-1) has a couple days off before heading on the road for its first road game of the season. The Chargers will take on Santa Monica on Wednesday at 2:30 pm.
