Cypress men’s soccer had a solid season opener in 2010, with a 2-2 tie against Southwestern at home. The Chargers picked up their first victory of the year in game number two, when they shutout today’s opponent – Chaffey – 1-0 in a defensive battle at home. They made it three straight, with another 1-0 win over Mira Costa on the road, and a convincing 4-2 win over Moorpark on home turf. The team looked good down the stretch as well, with two victories and three ties in their last five contests of the year.
Women’s volleyball capped off the most successful season in school history with a historic run through the regular season and playoffs, and a Top 3 finish in the California Community College Athletic Association’s final rankings. The Chargers dominated nearly every opponent they faced for much of the season, including nine straight wins heading into the CCCAA State Final 4 Tournament.
The women’s water polo team will play its first two games of the year on Saturday at home when it hosts the Mini-Tournament. It will also mark the beginning of the “Beidler Era” in women’s women’s water polo at Cypress College. After parting ways with long-time coach Paul Roberts in the offseason, Cypress is ready to turn the page and set its sites on bringing home an Orange Empire Conference crown with its newly appointed head coach, Larry Beidler, at the helm. Beidler is the head coach of both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, so moving over to take over the entire aquatics program at Cypress College is a natural fit. He’s also surrounded himself with some talented assistants to ensure that the Chargers are competitive right out of the gate. Current swimming assistant coaches, Denise Haley and Pavielle Miranda, have come over to water polo to help out, while former Golden West and Santa Ana College head coach, John Wright has come aboard to help. Wright has been very successful at his previous stops, and this shouldn’t be any different.
