Student Members Sought for CA Community College Board of Governors

The California Community College system’s Board of Governors is seeking student members to serve on the board in a non-voting capacity. Successful candidates will be appointed to the position by Governor Brown. The following information was provided by the state chancellor’s office.

Attention Student Leaders,

The Student Senate for California Community Colleges has begun its search for students interested in bringing their voices and perspectives to the California Community College System’s Board of Governors. Based on Education Code §71000, the Student Senate is responsible for nominating each year the student members to the Board of Governors for consideration of appointment by the Governor.

The selected individual will sit in the non-voting seat for one year, and then could be moved to the voting seat for a year for a potential 2 year term. The Student Senate Council will select at least THREE (3) qualified nominees to be forwarded to the Governor of California where candidates will be interviewed and the appointment made. It is a two year appointment, and it does not prevent one from transferring to a 4 year institution during the process as long as community college enrollment is maintained.

Applications Due:
Monday-September 22, 2014

Required Candidate Criteria:
Must be a student currently enrolled in a California community college with a minimum of five semester units, or its equivalent, at the time of the appointment and throughout the period of his or her term. A student member shall be enrolled in a community college at least one semester before his or her appointment; and
Must maintain the minimum standards of scholarship prescribed for community college students (e.g. 2.0 cumulative GPA)
