A Record 637 Attend New Student Welcome Night

NSWN

More than 600 new students and their parents participated in New Student Welcome Night — packing the Campus Theater, touring the campus, and using a variety of support services to prepare themselves for the start of the new academic year. The attendance figure at the event, which was held August 31, represented an all-time high.

“We had 581 new students and 56 parents attend our event,” said Paul de Dios, Cypress College’s Dean of Counseling and Student Development. “Since the inception of NSWN six years ago, this is by far, the largest number of attendees.”

A long list of employees and students were responsible for the planning and implementation of the event, according to de Dios who co-chaired the welcome night with Rick Rams, the College’s Dean of Student Support Services.

“We want to thank … the Cypress College family for their support and participation in welcoming 637 students (and) parents today,” de Dios said.

A first for the six-year-old event came in the form of participation by members of the new Student Ambassador program. More than 1,500 incoming students received calls from the ambassadors, who work under the leadership of Lark Crumpler.

Employees across the campus also participated in the planning and the event itself. They work in areas such as Maintenance and Operations, Campus Safety, Admissions and Records, Counseling, Student Services, Campus Communications, and, of course, each of the instructional areas of the College.

Alumnus Jose Gonzalez — a former president of the Associated Students and a graduate of UCLA — provided an inspiring welcome and offered strategies to successfully navigate the college experience. Current A.S. President Angel Garcia and College President Dr. Bob Simpson were among others greeting the new students.

Associated Students sponsored the food and refreshments while Dave Okawa and the A.S. Student Leaders grilled and served hamburgers and hot dogs to our hungry guests.
