To enroll in your first English course, you must take the placement test in the Assessment Center. Your results will determine which course you start with.
ENGL 27 C Basic Study Skills
This course is designed to assist students with limited academic background in experiencing success in the areas of goal setting, time management, memory, note, and test taking skills. English 27 is a good course to take along with English 57.
ENGL 57 C Reading and Writing I
This course is designed for first semester college students and emphasizes basic instruction in reading and writing. It is designed to prepare students for English 58. We recommend English 27 (Basic Study Skills) as a good course to take at the same time.
ENGL 58 C Reading and Writing II
This course is designed to prepare students for ENGL 060 C and for the demands of college reading and writing. It includes such topics as academic comprehension, vocabulary development, and basic academic composition. This course is also offered online in a nine-week format.
ENGL 96 C College Reading Strategies
This course is designed to prepare students for the demands of academic reading: i.e. textbooks, professional journals, and technical reading in the workplace. This is a good course to take concurrently with English 60. It is offered online in a nine-week format.
ENGL 106 C Critical Thinking
This critical reading, writing, and thinking course teaches the student to analyze and evaluate elements of rhetoric and logic in written communication. It meets the CSU critical thinking requirement and the Cypress College Reading Requirement for the A.A. degree. It is also offered online in a 12-week format.
ENGL 137 C College Study Strategies
This course emphasizes learning and critical thinking strategies crucial for academic success: time management, listening, note taking, academic reading/rate improvement and test taking. Every college student should take this course early in his or her college career. It is also offered online in a nine-week format.
