SUMMARY:TRANS VISIBILITY with Alexandra Billings
DESCRIPTION:Alexandra Billings is an amazing human being with a wealth of experience and wisdom in the areas of theater\, film\, activism\, and higher education. She has been acting since 1968\, performed in hundreds of plays and musicals (incl. Wicked)\, and appeared and had recurring roles on several TV series (incl. Transparent and The Connors). She is an HIV advocate\, is passionate about trans rights\, and has received multiple awards for her LGBTQ+ activism. She received her MFA from CSU Long Beach\, where she also taught for several years. She now teaches at USC and is committed to all students. She also has a beautiful love story. \nDuring this two-hour event\, we will view clips from Alex’s original “S/He & Me: A Theatrical Cabaret\,” which “chronicles the unvarnished\, complex\, desperate\, and often hilariously wacky story of Billings’ life\, centering on the transition from the young Scott to the show-stopping Alexandra” (broadwayworld.com). With each clip\, Alex will share more of her story with us. Throughout the event\, questions from participants will be encouraged to make the time more of a conversation. Questions related to Alex’s transgender identity as well as her career are encouraged. She wears her heart on her sleeves\, and no question is off-limits. \nWe encourage anyone who wants to better understand and/or support the trans community to join us for this event. \nWe will also be streaming the entire S/He & Me performance during Spring Break at our Queer-Straight Alliance club meeting on Thursday\, April 1 from 12-2 p.m. at bit.ly/QSAmeeting. We would love for you to join us! However\, it is not necessary to view this prior to our event with Alex. \nRegister for the event at bit.ly/CCTransVis. \nGet additional information here.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Louis Pesce
DESCRIPTION:The word contemplate (to gaze\, reflect and consider) is based on templum (the Latin origin of temple)\, which means to mark out a sacred place for observation. Ancient augurs (a college of Roman priests) would consecrate a templum in a rectangular area of land and sky to observe the flight of birds and interpret auspicious omens. \nTemple of Contemplation\, Pesce’s 2019 installation at Cypress College\, allows one person at a time inside the structure to make their own observations and interpretations\, as Roman augurs did in antiquity.

SUMMARY:Freedom Writers: "Stories from the Heart"
DESCRIPTION:Freedom Writers: “Stories from the Heart” is part of our Black History Month celebration. Meet Erin Gruwell\, educator and author of “The Freedom Writers Diary.” This event takes place in Humanities 131. \nSynopsis\nFreedom Writers: Stories from the Heart follows idealistic teacher Erin Gruwell as she tries to reach 150 at-risk students who were labeled “unteachable.” It’s 1994 and Long Beach\, California is a racially divided community filled with drugs\, gang warfare\, and homicides. Inside the classroom\, Gruwell encounters hostility\, indifference\, and racial divisions between students. The struggle and strife on the streets has carried into the school halls. \nRefusing to give up\, Gruwell uses relevant literature and media to compare their reality in urban America to the worst examples throughout history of man’s inhumanity to man. Her students are particularly inspired by the writings of Anne Frank and Zlata Filipovic\, and ultimately choose to put down their weapons and pick up a pen. The once-hardened teens discover a new way to express themselves and embrace history\, humanity\, and hope. By sharing their stories\, they rewrite their futures and become catalysts for change.

Williams announced his calling into the ministry in the local newspaper at age 7; however\, it was not until age 27 that he finally accepted the call. At that time\, he fully submitted himself into the hands of God in preparing him for ministry. His formal preparations include attending San Diego State University\, earning and receiving two undergraduate degrees from the former Linda Vista Bible College & Seminary (Southern California Seminary) and Christian Heritage College\, Masters of Divinity degree from Bethel University\, post-graduate studies at Bethel Seminary St. Paul\, and Doctorate of Ministry degree from Faith Seminary. \nHis ministry experience include twenty-five years and counting as a Pastor-Teacher\, the President of Progressive Baptist District Association Congress on Christian Education and for fourteen years prior as Dean\, Dean of California Missionary Baptist State Convention Congress on Christian Education\, Dean of Baptist Ministers Fellowship of San Diego and Vicinity\, Dean and Professor at Southern California Bible Institute\, author of “CLOM” (Council of Licensing and Ordaining Ministers)\, as well as a wide array of ministry experiences. He has a love for sharing his gifts to God’s glory\, and preparing others for ministry. Dr. E. M. Williams now serves as pastor of St. Luke Holy Baptist Church of Long Beach\, California. \n \nElder Karen Persip is considered a talented and charismatic individual. She serves on the Ministerial staff and teaches Bible study at\, Chapel of Peace Church\, in Los Angeles under the leadership of her pastor\, Bishop Ervin Smith. Elder Persip received her license to preach and teach the gospel in 1998\, by Bishop Keith Green of Macedonia Full Gospel Church. Her license allows her to minister nationally and internationally. In 1999\, Elder Persip founded “Practical Living through Jesus Christ Ministries”. Her vision is to “reach the unreachable and to love the unloved.” Elder Persip received her ministerial training from Rhema Word Ministries through Rev. Kenneth Hagin and has a B.A. degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. She is a member of Toastmasters International and received the designation of \nDistinguished Toastmaster in 2011. She is a retiree of Kaiser Permanente\, where she was employed as an Administrator for Behavioral Health Services. \nChoir\nSt. Luke Holy Church has been established on the West side of Long Beach in November 1956. The church was created to help the growing military families. As the church multiplied ministries and regularly scheduled worship services were developed. The purpose of the Music Ministry was and is to glorify the name of the Lord based on Psalms 47 verse 6\, “Sing praises to God\, sing praises!” As well as Psalms 100 verses 1 and 2\, “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD\, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing.” The Mass Choir has be a constant for over 60 years providing worshipful music leaving evidence of Christ. As times changed\, so did the music\, instead of the traditional gospel music to modern gospel music. The Choir seeks to bridge the gap between the two\, traditional style gospel music\, and contemporary music\, eager to inspire and touch the hearts of many.
