DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nina Lanza is the Team Lead for Space and Planetary Exploration at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She is on the science teams for the ChemCam instrument on the NASA Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity) rover and the SuperCam instrument on the upcoming NASA Mars 2020 rover. \nShe started at Los Alamos as a post-baccalaureate student and continued at the laboratory as a graduate student and postdoc before becoming staff in 2014. Her current research focuses on understanding the origin and nature of manganese minerals on Mars and how they may be indicators of past and present life. DESCRIPTION:This event features Gerardo Franco\, a Mechanical Engineer at Raytheon. Aerospace & Beyond will take place in HUM-131. \nGerardo is a double Bruin\, having earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from UCLA. The summer after his first year at UCLA\, Gerardo interned at Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems. He has worked in various roles at Raytheon every summer since and now works on a space program developing NASA weather satellites. Gerardo is also a two-time TEDx speaker. \nHis first TEDx talk was on combining two unrelated disciplines to provide a competitive career advantage\, while his second talk discussed lowering greenhouse emissions in shipping by reducing the water drag ships experience. He now is president of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) South Bay Los Angeles professional chapter.

This workshop will discuss how to overcome those obstacles! \nJoin us as we learn about our speaker and how to overcome obstacles in higher education! \nEdward Gonzales has over a decade of professional experience working with NASA in multiple roles. He is currently a business administrator for Minority University Research Education Programs (MUREP) & Outreach. Mr. Gonzales has presented to various K-12 and universities across the country. He has participated in panels at various professional conferences such as: Society of Women Engineers (SWE)\, Great Minds in STEM\, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)\, and more! \nHis countless contributions to the advancement and success of NASA’s outreach efforts and motivational speaking engagements have been highly recognized by his awards and honors in: \n\nNASA Group Achievement for Higher Education for MUREP\nNASA Individual Achievement for Directors Award\nNASA Solar System Team Award\nNASA Group Achievement Award for Voyager Missions\n\nJoin us to meet our speaker as he discusses the phenomenon of the ‘Impostor Syndrome’ and how that impacts students in education and how to overcome it and achieve success. \nAll are welcome to attend!
