SUMMARY:Art Gallery: Beyond the Pale
DESCRIPTION:“Beyond the Pale” runs from March 7 through April 11. The opening reception is Thursday\, March 7\, from 6–8 p.m. \nTo go “beyond the pale” is to move outside the acceptable\, the safe\, and the known. “Beyond the Pale” presents work by artists who step outside the bounds of Western scientific thinking in their efforts to know and interpret the world\, including Johanna Breiding & Shoghig Halajian\, Olivia Chumacero & Sarita Dougherty\, Veronique d’Entremont\, Helen Lessick\, Jennifer Moon\, and Louis Pesce. \nAlthough the exhibition does include a near-magical broom\, its title has nothing to do with buckets. Instead our “pale” refers to the “paling” fence posts that would once have enclosed a village or a fort\, but which are now more commonly used to “impale” Hollywood vampires.

SUMMARY:Ursula Lowenbach Foster Holocaust Memorial Scholarship Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Ursula Lowenbach Foster Holocaust Memorial Scholarship\nHistory is the result of choices made by people at a particular time. The Holocaust occurred because individuals\, groups\, and nations made choices to act or not to act. \nUrsula Lowenbach Foster survived the Holocaust because of the choice made by a courageous Dutch couple. They secretly hid Ursula\, her parents\, and 13 other Jews in an overcrowded house in Amsterdam. After barely escaping detection by the Nazis and spending a year sleeping in the dirt underneath the house among the crawling insects and rats\, Ursula and the 15 other Jews were liberated by the Allies in 1945. \nLater in life\, Ursula displayed her own courage by overcoming her shy nature to share her terrifying experiences with innumerous children at many different schools. \nUrsula had a tremendous impact on the lives of those students\, teaching them what can happen “if prejudice and hatred are allowed to run wild.” This scholarship is a testimony to the legacy Ursula created. \nAwards\nA $500 scholarship will be presented to the top entry in each of the following categories: \nCollege Division\nEssay/Poetry Category\nVisual/Performing Arts Category \nHigh School Division\nEssay/Poetry Category\nVisual/Performing Arts Category \nScholarship Presentation Format Options\nWritten Prose\nMay include essays or poetry. \nVisual & Performing Arts\nMay include original music\, photography\, dance\, computer-generated images\, ceramics\, charcoal\, pencil\, pastel\, watercolors\, acrylics\, or oils. \nDEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: MARCH 15\, 2019 \nEligibility\nTo be eligible for the scholarship\, submit an entry following the instructions contained in this document. All entries will be reviewed by the Scholarship committee and prizes of $500 will be awarded to the top finisher in each college and high school category. \nRequirements\nStep One: Research or interview a Holocaust survivor\, witness\, or rescuer. \nStep Two: Based on what you have learned from your research in Step One\, choose a topic for your submission from one of the following themes: \n\nWE MUST NEVER FORGET — The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington has Elie Wiesel’s famous words carved in stone at the entrance. “For the dead and the living\, we must bear witness.” With the passing of time\, fewer survivors remain alive to tell their stories. How might we best preserve and pass on the stories of Holocaust survivors so that the persecution of all groups can be avoided in the future?\nSAVE ONE LIFE AND YOU HAVE SAVED THE WHOLE WORLD — Many people are familiar with the story of Oscar Schindler and his role in saving the lives of Jewish people during the Holocaust. Research the life of another individual who helped save Jewish people. What motivated them to risk their life to save Jews during the Holocaust? How can we help others find this level of courage for the betterment of today’s world?\nTHAT WHICH DOESN’T KILL ME MAKES ME STRONGER — Despite the tortured past of Holocaust survivors\, many of those who survived the Holocaust have found ways to move past those horrors and succeed in many fields. Research or interview a survivor who faced persecution yet persevered\, and who later contributed to society in a positive way. What impact does the survivor’s story have on your life?\nTHOSE WHO FORGET THE PAST ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT IT — The Holocaust was not the first mass persecution of Jewish people. To make sure there is never again a mass persecution of any group of people\, governments and individuals must be ready to take action. Based on lessons learned from the stories of Holocaust survivors\, provide your specific recommendations about actions that should be taken.\n\nStep Three: Choose to submit your presentation in one of the presentation formats indicated below. Only one entry per person. \nWritten Prose – May include Essays or Poetry. Essays must be between 500 to 750 words\, original poems 750 words or less. Please indicate word count on submission. \nVisual & Performing Arts – May include original music\, photography\, dance\, computer-generated images\, ceramics\, charcoal\, pencil\, pastel\, watercolors\, acrylics\, or oil. \nSubmission Criteria\n\nScholarships open to students of any faith.\nA student participating in the College section must be attending Cypress College.\nEntry forms\, essays\, poems\, music and dance submissions\, must be submitted as digital files.\nVisual arts entries should be submitted as original art.\nFilm/Dance/Music: Final file size must not exceed 600 MB.\nLarge files may be submitted using WeTransfer.com\, a free file transfer website.\nAll entries must be original work. Any entry deemed to be an edited version or rendering of someone else’s work will be disqualified.\nDeadline for Submission is March 15\, 2019.\n\nSubmission Must Include\n\nCompleted “Official Cover Sheet”\nOriginal Essay\, Poem\, or Visual/Performing Art Production based on one of the prompts above\nArtist/writer statement of intent. (100 word limit)\nBibliography list of sources used.\n\nSubmissions will be evaluated based on the following criteria:\nSubmission: \n\nDemonstrates evidence of insight and personal reflection.\nCommunicates clearly the inspiration and intent of the piece in the artist’s statement.\nApproaches selected topic thoughtfully.\nReflects artistry\, skill and originality and in the case of a written entry\, demonstrates cohesiveness\, good grammar and syntax.\nIs memorable and engaging\, purposeful and historically accurate.\n\nPlease Submit Completed Package To:\nHoward Kummerman c/o\nCypress College Foundation Office\nhkummerman@cypresscollege.edu \nResearch Suggestions\n\nwww.youtube.com/uscshoahfoundation\nwww.ushmm.org\nthe1939society.org\nwww.holocaustchronicle.org\nwww.yadvashem.org\nwww.remembertheholocaust.org\nwww.kleinfoundation.org\nwww.facinghistory.org\nwww.jewishpartisans.org\nwww.vhf.org\njfr.org\nfcit.usf.edu/holocaust/people/people.htm

SUMMARY:Enrique “Kiki” Zuniga Scholarship Deadline
DESCRIPTION:History of Scholarship & Enrique “Kiki” Zuniga\nEnrique “KiKi” Zuniga—whose immigrant parents were from Guanajuato\, Mexico—was born and raised in the City of La Habra and is one of thirteen children: eight brothers and four sisters. Prior to Mendez vs. Westminster\, which ended segregation in California schools\, Kiki attended Wilson School\, which was set up for Mexican American children. \nKiki attended Fullerton College before being drafted into the Army in 1961. After his service\, he worked as a barber and in construction. However\, with the guidance of Joe Lopez\, professor at California State University Fullerton\, Kiki enrolled in CSUF\, where in his first semester as a student\, he made the Dean’s List. Motivated by the Chicano Movement\, he founded and served as the first M.E.Ch.A President at CSUF. In this role\, Kiki visited local barrios to motivate Chicano youth to pursue higher education. \nAfter earning his Bachelor’s degree at CSUF\, he attended UC Santa Cruz\, where he earned a K-12 Bilingual Teaching Credential. He then returned to CSUF to complete his Master’s degree in Library Science. Upon earning his Master’s degree\, he was hired as a tenure-tracked full-time counselor at Fullerton College with one condition: he needed to earn a Master’s degree in counseling\, which he would eventually receive from Chapman University. Making Fullerton College history\, he was the college’s first full-time tenured-tracked Chicano counselor. \nKiki served as a counselor at Fullerton College for twenty-five years. During his tenure\, he played a pivotal role in changing the campus climate relative to serving underrepresented and low-income students. He was known as the counselor who reached out to non-traditional students to motivate and convince them to pursue their goals for a brighter future. He was dedicated to helping students and believed in the power of education to change lives. He was famously known for “walking the quad” and making sure his students were in class. \nWhen Mr. Zuniga retired\, Fullerton lost one of its pillars. This scholarship is dedicated to him for his significant accomplishments and his love for guiding non-traditional students to academic success. \nScholarship Criteria\nA scholarship review committee will be judging all complete applications and will award scholarship amounts based on the essay and the categories below. The committee will award at least three $300 scholarships each to one Cypress student\, one Fullerton Student and one NOCE Student. Students are only eligible for one scholarship. \n\nStudent must have minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.0\nStudent must have completed at least 9 units and currently enrolled in at least 6 units (at FC and/or CC).\nStudents enrolled in Fullerton College or Cypress College must have the goal of transferring to a 4-year University.\nStudents enrolled in the North Orange Continuing Education must have a goal of attending Cypress College or Fullerton College.\nStudent must clearly state their commitment to higher education.\nProvide example of the level of commitment to the Latino community.\nAmount of community/volunteer hours served\nInclude any information that demonstrates your leadership roles/experience\n\nAward Dates\nScholarship recipients will be notified via email by Wednesday\, April 3\, 2019 and must be available to attend the Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Thursday\, April 25\, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. at Cypress College. \nDownload the criteria and the application here.
