SUMMARY:Disability and Inclusion Month
DESCRIPTION:We’re beyond awareness….. \nOctober is DISABILITY & INCLUSION Month \nIndividuals with disabilities intersect all pathways of life — across religions\, gender identities\, ethnicities\, races\, religions\, sexual orientations\, and socioeconomic status. Even though\, many of us still lack the grasp of the complexity\, depth\, and history of individuals with disabilities. Join DSS throughout the month of October to celebrate disability and engage in building inclusive learning environments. Appreciate the impact the disability community has and continues to make on our society and embrace disability as a natural part of our diversity. \nTech Tuesdays! Integrating Inclusive Technology \nLearn about technology that engages students and allows them to take control of their learning. \nTuesday\, October 5\, 2021 \n2–3 p.m. \nFacilitators: Steve Auger and Dr. Dawn Decker \nFeaturing: Otter.ai \nZoom \nOtter is inclusive and can be used everywhere. Lectures\, meetings\, and gatherings can be streamed in real time so individuals can follow the lecture or conversation. Otter is an AI digital assistant that generates notes from live conversations with a recording feature and synchronized speech recognition. Many have discovered the power of Otter.ai to take notes\, transcribe lectures\, capture notes from group study sessions\, and process audio data. Join us to learn about Otter.ai! \nTuesday\, October 12\, 2021 \n2–3 p.m. \nFacilitators: Steve Auger and Dr. Dawn Decker \nFeaturing: Kurzweil \nZoom \nKurzweil is a software designed to provide literacy support in the classroom\, home\, or workplace. Its built-in features for reading\, writing\, and studying help students become independent learners and active participants in and outside of the classroom. Join Tech Tuesday to see what Kurzweil can do for you and Cypress College students. \nTuesday\, October 19\, 2021 \n2–3 p.m. \nFacilitators: Steve Auger and Dr. Dawn Decker \nFeaturing: Windows 10 Accessibility \nZoom \nLearn how to use Windows 10 accessibility features to choose how to interact with your screen\, express ideas\, and get work done. Join us to learn more! \nTuesday\, October 26\, 2021 \n2–3 p.m. \nFacilitators: Steve Auger and Dr. Dawn Decker \nFeaturing: Mobile Apps \nZoom \nMobile apps are accessible anywhere at anytime. Apps help students understand information from different perspectives. They are interactive and engaging\, making for a less passive learning experience. Join us to learn about mobile apps and how to use them to engage students with disabilities. \n  \nCrip Camp — A Disability Revolution \nScreening and Discussion\nCrip Camp is the story of one group of people and their journey to activism and adulthood. We will delve into the rich and complicated history of disability activism\, culture\, and history. Crip Camp emphasizes stories surrounding people of color and other intersectionally marginalized communities. \nTuesday\, October 26\, 2021 \n5–7:30 p.m. \nFacilitators: Adrienne Sanchez and Dr. Dawn Decker \nZoom \n  \nLanguage\, Power\, and Ableism — Join the conversation!  \nLearn about and discuss the power of language and ableism and how this discrimination and social prejudice impact people with disabilities. Learn how to de-root ableism in our everyday lives. \nThursday\, October 28\, 2021 \n3–4 p.m. \nFacilitators: Deborah Michelle and Sandra Garcia \nZoom

SUMMARY:The Persisting Significance of the Incarceration of Japanese Americans
DESCRIPTION:NOCCCD Asian Pacific Islander Faculty & Staff Association and the Office of Diversity and Compliance recognize the Day of Remembrance with The Persisting Significance of the Incarceration of Japanese Americans. \nEric Yamamoto\nFred T. Korematsu Professor of Law and Social Justice\nUniversity of Hawai’i at Manoa\,\nSchool of Law \nWednesday\, Feb. 16\, 2022\n1-2:30 p.m.\nZoom Link\nMeeting ID: 954 6134 4320\nPassword: 774774\nREGISTER FOR THIS EVENT ON EDVANTAGE \n2022 marks the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 initiating the World War II incarceration of 120\,000 Japanese Americans on what turned out to be falsified claims of group disloyalty. This mass racial treatment\, and the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1944 Korematsu decision legally validating it\, remain startlingly significant today. What will happen when those detained\, harassed or discriminated against in the name of national security turn to the courts for legal protection? \nHow will the U.S. courts respond to the need both to promote security and to protect fundamental democratic liberties enshrined in the Bill of Rights? \nProfessor Yamamoto is nationally and internationally recognized for his legal work and scholarship on civil\nprocedure as well as national security and civil liberties\, civil and human rights and social justice\, with an emphasis on reconciliation initiatives and reparations for historic injustice. His presentation will be informed by his recent book\, In the Shadow of Korematsu: Democratic Liberties and National Security.

Below are some ways to help you boost your iron level before giving blood: \n\nEat a well-balanced diet every day.\nIron-rich foods include lean red meat\, chicken and seafood; garbanzo\, kidney and soy beans; fortified cereals\, bagels and lentils; leafy green vegetables such as spinach and kale; and nuts and seeds.\nCitrus fruits and juices and other foods high in vitamin C help your body absorb iron.\nCoffee and tea reduce the amount of iron absorption and should be avoided during meals.\nDonating blood reduces iron stores in your body\, so it’s important to replace the iron lost between donations to maintain good health.\n\nNote: Iron can be harmful in high doses. Supplements should be taken only as directed. \nIf you have any questions\, please call (310) 423-5346
