SUMMARY:Speaker Series: John Noltner\, A Peace of My Mind
DESCRIPTION:John Noltner will set up his camera and equipment to capture your photograph and responses to the question “What Kind of World Do You Want To Live In?” We encourage students\, staff\, and faculty to participate in this amazing opportunity to bring our campus community together to celebrate our shared experiences and humanity. \nFaculty & Staff please register on myGateway. Students do NOT have to register. \nWhere: Gateway Plaza \n“In a world that asks us to focus on the things that can separate us\, A Peace of My Mind invites us to explore the common humanity that connects us.” – John Noltner\, founder\, A Peace of My Mind \nJohn Noltner has been telling stories with words and images for twenty years for national magazines\, Fortune 500 companies\, and non-profit organizations. His work has appeared in National\nGeographic Traveler\, Forbes Magazine\, Midwest Living\, and the New York Daily News\, among other publications. A Peace of My Mind is a multimedia arts project built around the simple question\, “What does peace mean to you?” Founded in 2009 by award-winning Minnesota photographer John Noltner\, the project began as his effort to rediscover humanity in an increasingly polarized world.\nWith portraits and personal stories\, ordinary people reveal extraordinary insights into how we can work toward common good and create a world that is more just for all. Holocaust survivors\, refugees\, artists\, former prisoners\, teachers\, immigrants\, veterans\, and more share inspiring stories of compassion\, forgiveness\, and transformation in a series that celebrates our common experience and sense of community. The stories have been shared here at apeaceofmymind.net\, in two award-winning books\, and in traveling exhibits that are installed across the country. A Peace of My Mind serves as a powerful catalyst for community conversations about service to others\, civic responsibility\, and social change. A compelling storyteller\, John Noltner draws on his journey of discovery and the stories he has encountered along the way to lead engaging workshops\, seminars\, and keynote presentations\, books\, and in traveling exhibits that are installed\nacross the country. \n“A Peace of My Mind will tug at your heart and your sense of humanity. It’s difficult to digest this work and remain indifferent.” –Terri Lee Freeman\, President\, National Civil Rights Museum \n“A Peace of My Mind restored my faith in humanity and my hope for justice.” University of North Dakota

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: John Noltner\, A Peace of My Mind
DESCRIPTION:Where: HUM-136 \nJohn Noltner “What Kind of World Do You Want to Live In? \nJohn Noltner creates a visual presentation with the stories and photographs of staff\, students and faculty who participated in the September 3rd event. He draws on the wisdom of the stories and the importance of creating positive change in the world. A Question & Answer session will occur the last 15 minutes of the presentation. \n“In a world that asks us to focus on the things that can separate us\, A Peace of My Mind invites us to explore the common humanity that connects us.” – John Noltner\, founder\, A Peace of My Mind \nJohn Noltner has been telling stories with words and images for twenty years for national magazines\, Fortune 500 companies\, and non-profit organizations. His work has appeared in National\nGeographic Traveler\, Forbes Magazine\, Midwest Living\, and the New York Daily News\, among other publications. A Peace of My Mind is a multimedia arts project built around the simple question\, “What does peace mean to you?” Founded in 2009 by award-winning Minnesota photographer John Noltner\, the project began as his effort to rediscover humanity in an increasingly polarized world. \nWith portraits and personal stories\, ordinary people reveal extraordinary insights into how we can work toward common good and create a world that is more just for all.

SUMMARY:Cypress College Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cypress College Photography Department and the Edourd de Merlier Photo Gallery are proud to present four different artists for our Fall 2019 Exhibition. Sara Crapes\, “Woven and Sewn;” Candise Lintz\, “Oliver;” Eric Tenorio\, “Dimensions and ReExamination;” and Maria Villanueva\, “(Un)Documented.” These four individuals are presenting solo exhibitions on our walls\, yet they all seem to also intertwine. Each artist has been tackling ideas in their own way that deal with the self as representation\, perception\, awareness\, and overall identification. \nSara Crapes’ work deals with not only the day-to-day issues of what it means to be a woman in society\, but also copes with personal struggles that the artist has dealt with in her life. Love\, loss\, and longing all tug at the fabric of what make Sara\, Sara. Working with self-portraiture\, Sara pulls back the curtain to show us what certain pieces of her day-to-day life look like. \nCandise Lintz presents images of her son Oliver\, a young boy who has autism. Candise creates images that show the struggle of the outside world and the internal one that Oliver lives in\, by projecting photographs of the world beyond Oliver’s walls on to the boy. This creates a dynamic between where Oliver does exist\, which is safe at home\, and where he is yet free to roam outside as the rest of us in society. \nEric Tenorio presents two bodies of work that are separate yet related. Each one deals with Eric’s representation of the self\, and what it means to be a homosexual man of color in our American society. Confidence as well as self-doubt all influence the beautifully saturated colors of Eric’s palette\, and give us an unabashed look into his life. \nMaria Villanueva spent time photographing and interviewing young adults who are part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Maria herself is a DACA student as well\, and to create her powerful portraits of her fellow DACA individuals\, Maria used a traditional large format camera. This camera takes more time to use\, as well as has a much higher and richer sense of sharpness and quality\, and is something that most definitely has an influence on the viewer’s perception of the individuals in Maria’s portraits. \nThese four individuals come from all over Southern California and are all addressing issues that deal not only with the self but also with how we as a society interpret this idea\, and perhaps they also offer an alternate view. All these artists have one more thing in common as well: each one started out as a community college student. Each one has either gone on and received a degree in the arts\, is currently pursuing a degree\, or is currently working as a professional commercial photographer. \n“Woven and Sewn\,” “Oliver\,” “Dimensions and ReExamination\,” and “(Un)Documented” are all on display from August 26 until December 6\, 2019 in the Cypress Photography Gallery\, Tech Ed 1 Second Floor. An opening reception and artist talk is planned for Thursday September 19\, from 7-9 p.m.
