SUMMARY:Trauma Recovery and the Campus Community
DESCRIPTION:Tiombe Wallace is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with twenty years of experience as a feminist therapist\, educator\, and activist working to empower survivors and communities. Her specializations include feminist therapy\, trauma-informed care\, sexual and domestic/intimate partner violence\, child abuse\, as well as advocacy for survivors with disabilities and mental illness\, health advocacy\, working with communities of color\, and other anti-oppression work. \nHer presentation is designed to explore the aftermath of sexual victimization through the lens of survivors’ experiences. Focusing on the way that victimization particularly affects members of the immediate campus community\, Tiombe will draw from her experience of working exclusively with survivors of sexual violence in various settings\, including private psychotherapy practice\, rape crisis centers\, family counseling and family preservation programs\, locked psychiatric programs\, hotlines\, Sexual Assault Response Teams\, and the criminal justice system. The workshop is designed to help participants gain insight into the survivors’ experiences with the perpetrator before\, during\, and after sexual abuse/assault\, as well as the impact these details have on the survivor’s future mental health\, family dynamics\, and decisions regarding participation in the criminal justice system. \nThe presentation will explore spectrum of responses to the abuse\, including variations in how trauma manifests in particular populations.  The presentation will help participants become familiar with the specific impact of the survivors’ perceptions and internalization of being targeted or specifically manipulated due to her/his own identities\, including gender\, race\, class\, sexual orientation\, immigration status\, (dis)ability\, age\, religion\, etc. These factors will be discussed as they relate to the survivors’ willingness to participate in the criminal or restorative justice process\, family interventions\, or any other services. The workshop will aid participants in observing these crimes in the personal and social context of the survivor and understanding how targeting of certain populations—particularly on college campuses—is used to intensify the impact of sexual violence. \nThe CDC reports that roughly twenty percent of college women are victimized by sexual assault.  In response to this and other sobering statistics concerning gender-based sexual violence\, our purpose is to bring greater awareness to identifying causal\, preventative\, and healing measures that support survivors of sexual trauma and all members of the greater campus community.  Tiombe Wallace’s research and expertise provide integral insight into such possibilities. Students will benefit from her informative and inspiring presentation and feel empowered to improve campus culture with the knowledge of how they can help address such a rampant issue.   \nThe event will be held in CCCPLX 414.

DESCRIPTION:The Cypress College 50th Anniversary Production of Follies is based on the book by James Goldman\, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. In the musical\, past “Weismann’s Follies” performers reunite in a Broadway theater that’s scheduled for demolition. The focus is on two couples and their past and present lives. Orchestrations are by Jonathan Tunick\, by special arrangement with Cameron Mackintosh.
