SUMMARY:Black Student Success Week
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a series of webinars aimed at improving Black and African American student success. \nRegister now for Black Student Success Week’s daily webinar series: The Black hour. Throughout the week\, The Black Hour will share insights and approaches for improving student success among Black and African American students at California’s community colleges. Webinars will be held from 12–1 p.m. and are open to California Community College administrators\, staff\, faculty\, practitioners\, and students. \nMonday\, April 26 — Follow the Money: Unapologetically Supporting Black Students\nBlack Student Success Week will kick off with a conversation regarding the importance of being unapologetically supportive of Black students and Black student success. This webinar will include a discussion about the Follow the Money report\, which examines how Black students are systematically underinvested in by the state when it comes to higher education funding\, thus perpetuating economic inequity for Black Californians and the maintenance of a permanent underclass. \nTuesday\, April 27 — The ADT Journey for African American Students\nThis webinar will include a student panel that will explore the experiences of achieving an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT). African American students will share the benefits and challenges associated with their transfer pathway and degree completion at a California Community College. \nWednesday\, April 28 — Equity and Black Representation in Higher Education Leadership\nTo eliminate inequity in higher education such that student experiences and outcomes are not predicted by race\, public higher education requires diverse institutional leaders who define a vision\, determine a strategy\, and galvanize organization-wide action to mitigate inequity and close persistent racialized equity gaps. This webinar will explore the institutional barriers and biases in the identification\, recruitment\, selection\, and retention of equity-minded Black leaders at the CEO level in higher education and discuss actions that may lead to an increase in the number of BIPOC college and university presidents. Panelists will offer insight into their CEO journey\, discuss how exclusionary practices and barriers move the conversation away from individual preparedness to one of institutional bias\, and offer their insights into what actions can be taken to advance systemic change. \nThursday\, April 29 — A Legislative Briefing: Actively Advocating for Black Student Success\nHear from California legislators and community college advocates regarding important legislation and learn how to advocate on behalf of Black student success. This webinar will identify key bills and provide guidance as well as support for your college’s advocacy efforts. \nFriday\, April 30 — The Cost of Freedom: “Speaking Up to Diversify the Faculty Ranks”\nPresented by the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges\, this webinar will cover the role of the Black tax in serving on committees to diversify the faculty ranks\, and the trials and tribulations Black faculty endure to ensure adequate representation in the academy.
