This symposium delves into the critical issues revolving around race and mass incarceration using the film 13th — a documentary that examines the historical, political and sociological aspects of racial inequality and mass incarceration. The documentary is named after the 13th constitutional amendment, which abolished slavery except as “punishment for crime.” The documentary examines how many prisons are run by for-profit companies, resulting in prisoners been paid a pittance for their work. A discussion will follow the movie showing.
