Karen Le Cornet, B.A., M.A., DALF

Karen Le Cornet (luh kor-NEH) is a Professor of French and Spanish in the Foreign Language Department at Cypress College. She is the Academic Senate President-Elect, Language Arts Division Curriculum Representative, Foreign Language Department Co-Coordinator, and a Co-Advisor for the Spanish Club.

Le Cornet has been a full-time faculty member since fall 2019. In collaboration with her colleague, Mihoko Luther,  she developed two Foreign Language Certificates at the Elementary and Intermediate levels. She created a French Culture Through Cinema course (FREN 125 C) and coordinates the World Language Preview Day.

As a former community college student, Professor Le Cornet’s educational experiences inspired her commitment to making higher education more accessible. As a member of the Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) Faculty Workgroup, she helped expand Open Educational Resources (OER) and ZTC opportunities for students at Cypress College. She is the OER author and remixer of Elementary Spanish and led the development of ZTC pathways for the Spanish Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) degree. She coordinated the creation of free online homework systems for the Spanish and French programs through LibreTexts ADAPT. Additionally, she authored the exercises for the first-year French workbook. Her work advances the college’s commitment to equity and access by reducing financial barriers to student success.

Prior to becoming full-time, Le Cornet was an adjunct instructor and taught language and cinema courses at Chaffey College, Cypress College, and Mt. SAC as well as advanced French writing and culture at the University of Redlands. She was also an English Teaching Assistant for TAPIF, a program run by the French Ministry of Education. She created French and Spanish Directed Learning Activities for Chaffey’s Language Success Center. Her textbook revisions and work have been published in Mt. SAC’s Liberté 1 (2017) and UT Austin’s OER textbook, Français Interactif (2010).

Le Cornet received her M.A. in French from the University of Texas, Austin. She received her B.A.s in French Linguistics and Spanish Linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles. She also holds a DALF, a French language diploma in France.
