PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE

Timely Warning

August 20, 2014

All members of the campus community are advised to be aware of — and to avoid interaction with — a suspect who was possibly armed during the commission of a crime during the past weekend. Two men were involved in a burglary of the Humanities Building on Saturday, August 16, 2014. Officers from the Cypress Police Department arrested one suspect, but a second man remains at large.

The suspect, who according to police was believed to be carrying a gun, is described as a male, with a thin mustache, tightly cropped dark hair, and is about 25 years old. He was wearing a white tank-top, grey pants and has tatoos covering his upper left arm. Cypress Police reported that the suspects were seen jumping the wall north of parking lot 9, adjacent to the swapmeet office to both enter and exit the campus.

Anyone who sees the suspect should avoid contact and call police or Campus Safety from a safe area as soon as possible. The suspect who was arrested was still in custody at the time of this warning; he has a previous arrest record on campus and is considered to be dangerous. Photographs from surveillance video are included at the bottom of this report.

A laptop, positively identified as Cypress College property was recovered during the arrest. Campus officials anticipate that additional loss from the building will be discovered once faculty return to campus when classes resume on Monday, August 25. Employees are encouraged to swiftly report any missing property to Campus Safety. Employees are also reminded that when entering buildings outside of regular working hours they should do so only after advising Campus Safety of their location.

Students and employees are reminded that suspicious activity should be reported to Campus Safety and/or Cypress Police immediately. Additionally, students are reminded that Campus Safety can be reached 24-7 at (714) 484-7387, and that it is important to program that number into their mobile phones for quick access. Students are also encouraged to sign up for text messaging notifications in the myGateway portal by logging in at http://mg.nocccd.edu.
