Peer Tutor Program
The Cypress College English Department is currently accepting applications for Peer Tutors (formerly known as PALs) to support students in ENGL 101, 100 and ESL 110 courses during the Fall 2024 semester. Peer Tutors will serve as academic student leaders and mentors, playing a vital role in helping students implement effective study strategies, deepen their comprehension of course content, and enhance their overall academic performance by connecting with campus resources and sharing their own personal support. Peer Tutors will collaborate closely with the Peer Tutor Co-Leads, Faculty Coordinator, their assigned English Instructor, and the English Success Center (ESC) as well as undergo regular training to provide comprehensive support to their peers.
Qualifications
- Completion of English classes, at minimum ENGL 100 (or ENGL 101, ESL 110, or equivalent), with a grade of a B or higher
- An overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as maturity, reliability, and dependability.
- Taking Cypress classes in the fall.
Commitment
- Working with assigned class(es) through the majority of the fall semester (approximately 10-15 hours/week).
- Fall semester student training day: Wed., August 24, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the LRC (paid).
- Peer Tutor Meetings: 1-2 Fridays/month (paid).
Pay
- Pay will be commensurable with the Tutor & SI Leader pay chart (starting at $17/hour for 10-15 hours/week).
