NOCCCD Sheds Light on Mental Health and Wellness at Summit, Resource Fair
The first Mental Health & Wellness Summit presented by North Orange County Community College took place on the Cypress College campus October 29. Presented in partnership with The Steve Fund, a national organization serving young people of color to support their emotional wellness, the summit featured speakers, activities, breakout sessions, and a resource fair. Nearly 700 guests from across the district’s three campuses attended.
“The discussion of having such a summit was brought about in 2023 when the Steve Fund met with many of our administrators, managers, faculty, and staff to provide training exercises in support of mental health and emotional well-being for students of color and most vulnerable students on campus,” Dr. Troy Davis, dean of counseling and the chair of the event committee, said. He went on to say that it aligns with the Opening Day well-being message of Cypress College’s president, Dr. Scott W. Thayer.
After welcome statements in the Campus Theater by NOCCCD Chancellor Dr. Byron D. Clift Breland and Dr. Jan Collins of The Steve Fund, attendees chose from three activities: a wellness walk, yoga sequence, or visit to the ARISE lab, a space dedicated to recharging and respite. Breakout Sessions followed, on such topics as generational trauma, managing conflict, and using past adverse experiences to empower one’s future.
The day wrapped up with a closing celebration that featured a dance performance from Maha Afra & Friends and closing remarks by Dr. Thayer. Lunch and a resource fair followed, with representatives from local health and wellness groups showcasing their services.
