New Electric Vehicle Service Port Dedicated to Supportive Faculty and Partners

The Cypress College Automotive Technology Department recently installed eight new car lifts outside the auto shop as part of its Electric Vehicle Service Port construction project. During a dedication ceremony, supportive faculty and industry partners who helped make this possible were honored with placards on each of the new lifts.

Honorees include Cypress College President Dr. Scott W. Thayer, Vice President of Student Services Dr. Paul De Dios, and Vice President of Instruction Dr. Kathleen Reiland, who previously served as the dean of Career and Technical Education and oversaw the Automotive Technology Department.

Department Coordinator Marty Orozco says the added lifts allow two more classes to work in the laboratory simultaneously. He went on to say that this new system will appeal to industry partners as they transition toward the all-electric vehicle market.

“As electric vehicles become more prevalent in society, the students at Cypress College need a place to maintain, service and charge electric vehicles,” Orozco said. He added that funding limitations made this Electric Vehicle Service Port take about 18 years to get to this point.

Construction is set to conclude over the next few weeks, and regular instruction will proceed as planned. For the final step in the project, the Automotive Technology Department will seek funding to provide a solar canopy over the lift area.
