Student Shares Love of Reading by Donating Books to Local Elementary School
Cypress College student Sarah Barron recently set up a Little Free Library for San Marino Elementary School in Buena Park, for students to borrow from and build a passion for reading.
According to the OCDE Newsletter, Sarah built and supplied the small, raised, colorful bookcase outside the school’s multipurpose room as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project.
The Cypress College Political Science major held an opening event September 15 with school principal Daniel Gonzalez, Centrailia Superintendent Norma Martinez, teachers, staff, and Buena Park mayor Connor Traut.
According to the newsletter, the donation gave her a chance to give back to the school district that educated her, and that she was inspired to “spread awareness of the literacy crisis.”
The project includes local reading events, and was supported through the City of Buena Park Youth Microgrant Program, which supports youth-led community service.
