2023 PSD Health Science: Stephanie Wood
Stephanie Wood is passionate about helping people. Sometime after she earned her Sociology degree at UC Irvine, she decided to enter a field that more directly influenced people’s lives, and fulfilled that personal goal. She came to Cypress College and joined the competitive Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Now she’s entering the field and doing the work that inspires her: helping others.
Please tell us about Where did you grow up? What are your interests? What is your story?
I was born and raised in Garden Grove and attended Pacifica High School. After high school, I attended UC Irvine and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. After working full-time for a number of years after college I realized I wanted to pursue a new career which ultimately led me to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Cypress College.
What are you most passionate about? Why?
I am most passionate about making a positive impact on those around me. Part of what led me to sonography was knowing that I would be able to make a direct impact on those who need it most.
Why did you choose Cypress College?
Cypress College has an amazing reputation amongst sonography programs, which was the biggest factor for me. Friends of mine who have attended Cypress had only positive things to say about the school which further solidified my choice.
Share a memorable event or experience while you’ve been a Cypress College.
I cannot recall a single event, but one of the biggest takeaways I have from my time at Cypress is the lifelong connections I have made. My classmates in the program have been the biggest support for me.
Who are the faculty and staff (in your major, an academic or other support program, etc.) who have helped you get where you are today?
Nancy Corrales, Julie Hollinghurst, Emma Anton, Lynn Mitts, and Kelly Carter.
How has Cypress College supported you throughout your time at the college?
Cypress College has offered an amazing abundance of resources to its students. The LRC, tutoring, academic counseling, and outreach from the school has been amazing. I have always felt that Cypress offers the tools needed for every student to succeed.
What are your immediate plans after completing your studies at Cypress College (at your transfer institution, in the workforce, etc.)?
My plan is to immediately begin working in the ultrasound field.
What bit of advice would you give to current and future Cypress College students?
Research and explore the different opportunities and careers that interest you most. Do not be afraid to change paths and take risks. Talk to faculty and those in careers in which you are interested.
Is there anyone in particular you’d like to thank?
Nancy Corrales, Julie Hollinghurst, my family, friends, classmates, and boyfriend- all of whom have shown nothing but love and support during this rigorous program.
