2026 PSD Social Sciences: Alec Gibson

PSD Alec Gibson in graduation regalia

Alec Gibson, a political science major at Cypress College, has made the most of his time both inside and outside the classroom. Growing up in Buena Park, Alec was shaped by a strong sense of community and a deep appreciation for education, something he credits as a foundation for his growth. Driven by a passion for success, for himself as well as those around him, he approaches his goals with determination and a commitment to lifting others along the way.

At Cypress, Alec found a vibrant and supportive environment that encouraged him to get involved and thrive. Through his participation in Associated Students, the Legacy Program, A2MEND, and various campus activities, he discovered the value of connection and leadership. A particularly meaningful moment came from seeing his brother’s legacy honored on campus in a banner with his photo by the bookstore, inspiring Alec to follow in those footsteps and create his own.

With plans to transfer to a UC and eventually attend law school, Alec aspires to become a lawyer and open his own practice. Above all, he is proud of the person he has become and encourages others to embrace every opportunity, step boldly outside their comfort zones, and make their journey their own.

Please tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up? What are your interests? What is your story?

I grew up in Buena Park, surrounded by a strong sense of community and the support of family and friends. I’ve been fortunate to have access to education at every stage of my life, and that’s something I’m truly grateful for because I understand the value of education.

What are you most passionate about? Why?

I am passionate about success. I have always felt that I wanted to succeed not only for myself, but the people around me. I love being able to work toward the goals I set for myself, and if I can help anyone along the way do the same it is a reward in itself. As my dad would say, never forget who held the ladder for you and make sure you don’t pull it up behind you.

Why did you choose Cypress College?

I chose Cypress because I knew that if I came here and applied myself, I would have so many amazing opportunities to work toward transfer and grow as a student.

What have you been involved in at Cypress College? How has your path unfolded?

I have been involved in Associated Students, the amazing Legacy Program, A2MEND, and so many other clubs and programs that have been such an amazing part of my path. Being able to collaborate with so many clubs and programs and being able to attend multiple conferences, showed me the importance of student involvement.

Share a memorable event or experience while you’ve been a Cypress College student.

A memorable event for me is when my friends would walk near the student store and see my brother’s picture on the wall. They would always ask me is that your brother, or tease me about it. It made me so proud to see that and it motivated me to be the best student I could be. The amazing part is, that I now have the opportunity to be the scholar of distinction for the same division just as he was. I think about the legacy that I am able to leave behind and it makes me overjoyed.

Who are the faculty and staff (in your major, an academic or other support program, etc.) who have helped you get where you are today?

I want to shout out Professor Regina Rhymes, Daniel Lind, Gloria Badal, Giovanni Hortua, Dave Okawa, and Joseph Shonkwiler, and Brittany Hamer

How has Cypress College supported you throughout your time at the college?

The community that has surrounded me throughout my two years here has been amazing. I have always felt supported by

What are your immediate plans after completing your studies at Cypress College (at your transfer institution, in the workforce, etc.)?

My Immediate plan is to transfer out to a UC and work toward my undergrad in political science.

What are your long-term goals? What do you aspire to?

I want to attend law school and then become a lawyer. I have always felt since high school that I was so interested in law, and I eventually look forward to opening my own practice.

What are you most proud of?

I am proud of who I have become as a student and a person. If you had asked me a few years ago if I thought I would be in this position, I would have not believed it. I am so proud of the student I have become, and I can’t wait to move into the next part of my educational journey.

What bit of advice would you give to current and future Cypress College students?

You are only going to get out what you put in. Make sure you engage in every opportunity that Cypress College has to offer. Make your experience memorable and don’t be afraid to take a leap and step out of your comfort zone. For me, doing just that has led to a fantastic two years.

Is there anyone in particular you’d like to thank?

I would like to thank God for carrying me through these amazing two years. I want to thank my Dad and Mom for always being there for me when I needed them the most. I want to thank my brother and all of my family and friends who made an impact on my journey.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I’d like to say thank you to the college for giving me the opportunity to have such a special moment. Lastly I want to congratulate every single person here graduating with me, because we take this journey together.
