2024 PSD Social Sciences: Samantha Ramos

Samantha Ramos, 2024 Presidential Scholar of Distinction for the Social Sciences pathway

Lucky for us, Fullerton College’s Puente Program was almost full when Samantha Ramos applied. Samantha knew she wanted to be part of the affinity group, so she turned instead to Cypress College, which had open spots. With her fellow Puentistas at Cypress, she thrived. She felt more confident in her chosen field, where she excelled, and was motivated to join the Charger Experience Program and become a student ambassador. Sometimes a simple choice can change so much and, thanks to a simple decision to change colleges, Samantha became a vibrant part of the Cypress College community and an example of its strong academic and involved student body.

Please tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up? What are your interests? What is your story?

I am a Latina first-generation college student. I grew up in Anaheim with my parents and two brothers. My parents are from Mexico; my dad is a construction worker and my mom is a stay-at-home mom.

Growing up, I wasn’t the most confident student, because English is my second language and I never had proper resources until I got to Cypress. I started gaining more confidence in high school because I met my friends, who I am still friends with today. They motivated me a lot when it came to my education and interests. Because of them, I looked forward to attending school every day and recognized the importance of attending college.

What are you most passionate about? Why?

I am the most passionate about helping people. In my senior year of high school, I realized I liked community service and helping people. My current job as a student ambassador helps me fulfill that passion.

Why did you choose Cypress College?

I was initially going to attend Fullerton College for their fashion design degree, but I also wanted to be in the Puente Program. Once I heard that Fullerton was low on spots for their Puente Program, I looked more into Cypress, and I was able to sign up there.

What have you been involved in at Cypress College? How has your path unfolded?

During my first year at Cypress, I was fortunate to be a part of the Puente program. Looking back, it was a life-changing experience. The program helped me discover why I had chosen to pursue higher education in the first place, and it gave me confidence in my major. Initially, I was conflicted about my chosen field of study and had yet to decide what to do. After participating in the Puente program, however, I felt more secure in my decision and motivated to excel in my academic pursuits. The program provided me with the tools and resources I needed to succeed, and I will always be grateful for the opportunities it gave me.

As a student, I have been fortunate to participate in the Charger Experience Program as a Student Ambassador. This incredible program allows eligible students to receive two years of free tuition. It is not just about the financial benefit but also about creating a supportive student community. Apart from reaching out to other high schools and events to promote this program, I have also been helping students on campus. Whenever any student visits the Student Center seeking assistance, I am always there to lend a helping hand.

Share a memorable event or experience as a Cypress College student.

Puente allows students to go on field trips, and I went on two overnights. The first consisted of visiting three campuses: a private four-year university, a Cal State, and a UC. The day after was a transfer motivational conference for Puente students at UC Riverside. We saw what it would be like to transfer to a four-year after-community college and all the available programs there.

Who are the faculty and staff (in your major, an academic or other support program, etc.) who have helped you get where you are today?

From Puente, Dr. Therese Mosqueda-Ponce. and. Dr. Alejandro Omidsalar. helped me tremendously by providing resources and support. Brittany Hamer and Dario Resendiz from Charger Experience allowed me to become a Student Ambassador and help out students on campus. Professor Hilary Reuter also helped me by being an excellent, caring mentor throughout my first two semesters at Cypress.

How has Cypress College supported you throughout your time at the college?

Cypress College has supported me with the proper resources, such as free textbooks and scholarships. I used my scholarship money toward school supplies and a new car. Charger Experience has also allowed me to save money by providing me with two free years of tuition, and their events helped me connect with other students and learn more about the school.

What are your immediate plans after completing your studies at Cypress College (at your transfer institution, in the workforce, etc.)?

I will transfer to Cal State Long Beach to get my bachelor’s degree. I also want to get as involved as possible in Cal State Long Beach to feel connected to the campus and the students.

What are your long-term goals? What do you aspire to?

I want to have a fulfilling career that involves helping people. With my Psychology degree, I plan to go to medical school and become a psychiatrist, and if my plans change, I plan to be a clinical psychologist.

What are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of my progress and for choosing Cypress College instead of Fullerton College. Because of my involvement, I’ve had a fantastic experience at Cypress. Ever since becoming an ambassador, I have developed more leadership qualities, such as learning how to work in a team and the importance of communication.

What advice would you give current and future Cypress College students?

At first, college will be very intimidating. But after the first week, you will get the hang of it and realize everything is simple. I also recommend looking into all of the resources available at Cypress; everyone I’ve met who is in programs available to help students is accommodating.

Is there anyone in particular you’d like to thank?

I thank Dr. P and Dr. O for making my first year at Cypress more comfortable and fun. I also thank Hilary Reuter for being a fantastic mentor throughout my first year, making me feel more confident in my major, and nominating me for this scholarship. I would also like to thank the Charger Experience team for being committed and supporting me when I feel low.
