VA Certification Overview

Every student using VA Education Benefits is expected to meet the following criteria to maintain their certification status at Cypress College.

Learn what you’ll need to do to maintain or regain your education benefits below:

Certified

Certified students are approved to use their VA Education Benefits. To maintain this status, you’ll need to:

  • Create a Comprehensive Student Education Plan (CSEP) and Veteran Shopping Sheet (VSS) with a VRC counselor. (These documents must be updated each time you change majors.)
  • Complete a Veteran Enrollment Form (VEF) with a VRC counselor prior to the start of every term.
  • Register for the courses specified on your VEF. If you’d like to register for courses not previously listed on your VEF, you must obtain VRC counselor approval for course certification.
  • Maintain a 2.0 GPA or better.
  • Keep your information up to date with the Veterans Resource Center.
  • Inform the Veterans Resource Center if you drop or add a class.

Certified with Warning

You may be at risk of losing your VA Education Benefits and issued a warning if the following becomes true:

  • You earn below a 2.0 GPA, resulting in academic probation.
  • You drop a class before it is complete, resulting in an overpayment of benefits.

If you are below a 2.0 GPA and on probation for three consecutive terms, you will be scholastically dismissed from Cypress College.

Not Certified

Cypress College is required to report scholastic dismissals to the Department of Veterans Affairs which will result in a suspension of education benefits.

If you find yourself in this situation, you do have the opportunity to petition for readmission to Cypress College and enroll in courses for a future term prior to the dismissal being reported. In this case, no suspension of benefits will occur.
