Dental Hygiene

The Dental Assisting Program is a two-semester program that includes patient care experiences in a fully equipped on-site facility, with students assigned to clinics or dental offices for their externship experiences.

Dental Assistants are highly valued by the dental profession and have a choice of work environments from private offices to hospitals and clinics.

There is a profound shortage of qualified Dental Assistants and Registered Dental Assistants.  Our program prepares the students to satisfy this need.  As a dental assistant you will be involved in a variety of duties including managing the front office, preparing the patient, taking radiographs, and mixing dental materials.

Registered Dental Assistants are not only supportive members of the dental team but they also perform important procedures in the patient’s mouth under the supervision of a licensed dentist.

Program Information

The Cypress College Dental Hygiene program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, and has been granted the accreditation status of approval without reporting.  The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation.

The Dental Hygiene program offers a curriculum that provides the students with the academic instruction to achieve eligibility for the National Board of Dental Hygiene Examiners written examination, the California State Board Examination, the Western Regional Examining Board, and the Central Regional Dental Testing Services clinical examinations for licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist.

Upon completion of the Dental Hygiene program and the general education requirements, the graduate will be eligible for an Associate of Science Degree from Cypress College.  Students who have previously obtained either an associate of science, bachelor, or master degree and have completed the Cypress College Dental Hygiene program requirements will be eligible for a Certificate in Dental Hygiene.
